Would you buy a 1984 Porsche?
There is one for sale here in Monterey, CA for $2000. I am going to go take a look at it. I guess there are a some minor problems with it right now. Just wanted to hear from someone with more experience if this is bound to be more of a hassle than it would be worth. Like if parts are way to expensive and all that jazz.

A '84 944 is worth $2000, but parts are expensive. But as with any 25 year old car you will have to spend money to get it right. The diferance between a 944 and a Camaro is that you can find Camaro's in the junk yard and steal parts off from them. 944's are great cars that can be made into serious performance machines. The 3.0 4 cylinder was a total tourque monster and the turbo model was the quickest car of that time. Here are a few links for you to look at:

944's are expensive to repair, and hard to sell when you want to get rid of them. 0 -
put 2k down on an 88 or newer 911 I don't even consider a 944 (or a cayanne, 924, boxter, ....) to be a porsche 0 -

rear... $600

you can get some parts from autozone, i used to work there, i know.
also, autozone has an exclusive deal with a salvage yard system. they are tied in with 300+ salvage yards nation wide through one call center and can order in many parts that most people don't realize they can get. body panels, full exhaust systems, original motors, rims...to name a few. it's not a highly advertised option but it is offered. when i worked there, as commercial specalist, i found an original motor for a 74 cadillac with only 47,000 miles and in running condition. the garage i sold it too then set me up as their exclusive supplier. check them out. it wouldn't hurt.0 -
I bought one new in 1986 and drove it for six years! Damn, I loved that car, but then it needed a new clutch.
In 1992, they wanted $2000.00 for a new clutch, because the whole drive chain must be dropped to replace the clutch!

The 944 was the lowest "real" porsche since the 924 had an all Audi drivetrain. So you are getting the "Camaro" of Porsches. I also suggest using your $2k as a down payment on a better model like 911. 0 -
Not a 944... a '84 3.2l 911? Yes... although the '87-89 911 is better.
Personally for "cheap" Porsche-ing take a look at a 912. Early 911 body style, simple 356 type engine. Also they are at the bottom of their value, and will be going nowhere but up in the next 10 years.

Might be a fun project to drop a GM "iron duke" into. AC electrics... get rid of the trans-axle.. plenty of GM donors out there. How much work are you willing to do?
I committed a mortal sin to the British Sports car gods by dropping a "iron duke" into a Triumph TR3 narrow mouth. It was nice to have "negative" ground instead of "positive" earth and a ignition system that worked if there was a heavy dew.

Rare...got 30mpg over 20 years ago...still can find parts for them DIRT cheap. The old Turismo's and Charger's had the same front end/drivetrain.

Answer to would I buy and 84 Porche, been their done that the answer is is not again. If the engine on your 84 Porche blows a VW engine with dual carbs will fit so you can lay it on a dumb to busy dealer,when it runs at snail warp speed, just tell the dealer it needs a tune up. [of course we no that would include a $8 to 10K motor.] 0 -

Earl - an exception is the 356... tehn it is just a matter of finding parts! New clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing was just $200... easy to work on, etc. Now my turn signal switch, that was tough, but I found 3 in the country! 0 -
944 -2.5l a little slug,s model 2.7l better,s2 3.0l
fantastc performer, bullet proof motor ok for 250,000 miles, check timing belts & balance belts regulary done, 25,000 max miles..check sills in/out.
great car , check sunroof rack... classic to come!![;)]
oh yeh, superb handling 50/50 weight on tyres...exellent build, very reliable too, fuel 'who cares'...enjoy.[:D]0
