Riverview, Florida - Hillsborough County deputies say three teenagers are behind the ammonia leak that shut down Highway 301 at the Alafia River on Monday night. Officers say a 16 year old and two friends heard there was money hidden in a pipe. A 16 year old decided to drill into the ammonia pipeline. The pipe began leaking and burned the teen.
UPDATE: Riverview, Florida - Due to their proximity to the ammonia leak, the Hillsborough County Fire department recommends the closure of three schools today. Two private schools, Center Academy and Children's First Academy and one public school, Riverview Elementary were recommended for closure today. Riverview Elementary is open as a shelter, but firefighters did not want kids in the area as the winds could shift. Fire officals are calling this a "major ammonia leak" and want to keep kids out of harm's way while they work. If Riverview Elementary students need a place to go, they will be taken to Spoto High School on Eagle Palm Drive in Riverview. No classes will be held at Riverview Elementary today.
Fire officials are working to open a shelter on the south side of the Alafia River bridge for evacuees. Firefighters are dispersing the leak with large quantities of water. The are working with Tampa Pipeline on the situation.
A mobile home park located on the southwest corner of U.S. 301 and the Alafia River was evacuated. There are no hard figures this morning on how many people were forced to leave in the half mile stretch of evacuated area.
The firefighters on scene this morning are pumping 4,000 gallons of water per minute onto the 8th of an inch hole to try to keep the leak under control. Repair crews are waiting for the leak to bleed out and the pressure to go down so they can weld a patch onto the hole.
U.S. 301 remains closed north and southbound this morning. It's closed at Gibsonton Drive and and Riverview Road. Your recommended alternates are U.S. 41 and I-75.
