5.11 vs. BDUs
any pros/cons of one vs. another? i've been getting BDU's but they cost so damn much around here in a surplus store, and not much cheaper on the internet besides that a pair of pants doesn't last more than a few months. not that i am hurting for cash but i just hate shopping. just got myself a pair of 5.11 tactical pants -- they seem pretty well made and not as sloppy as BDUs. anyone else wear those? how are they long term?

well, that's what they call them. they are just cargo pants, whatever, comfy, durable and got enough pockets to drag everything i need that i don't want in my bag or backpack (i hate "batbelts").0 -
I have a 5.11 tactical vest. I don't wear it very often but it seems well made.
I got it for those times when it is not cold enuff for a coat but I can wear it to carry my gun with me. It has lots of hidden pockets to keep a gun in.0 -

I can tell you that wearing 5.11 clothes and others like it just screams GUN.0 -
i dont know what you are doing to wear out BDU's so fast. Brand new they are like 60-70 a set. Used probably half that. To bad you werent close to a base. I'll tell you if your looking for durability dont buy the ACU's(army combat uniform) the digital stuff they dont last. Also with bdus theirs the two fabrics, the cotton like or heavy weight and the more nylon looking stuff or light weights. the heavy weights are a lot more tougher 0 -

I for one don't worry about people thinking or knowing that I am carrying a gun.
Infact most anyone who has gotten to know any little thing about me knows that 99% of the time I have a gun on me somewhere. And I believe that this would make someone think twice before attempting something.
Yes it could back fire on you as well, but I still don't really care who knows that I am carrying as I have allways been the type that stays real aware of my surroundings and it would be difficult for someone to sneak up on me to give me any surprises.0 -
I wear the 5.11 shorts. Very well made with plenty of pocket space. Plan on getting a few more pairs. 0 -

I wear them at the range around the house, when I go out. I love them, Im wearing a pair of their shorts now. As a matter of fact I seldom wear any of my other shorts in the summer. They have plenty of pockets for all of your carry items and are very comfortable. If Im wearing the pants I will put the knee pads inside them and it makes being down on your knee's much more comfortable. They offer them in several colors and 3 styles, I even bought my wife a couple pair of shorts last yr. 0 -

Winter (I am refering to Material here, not color pattern) BDU's are great, save the summer ones (wear out quicker) for when it's really really hot.
5.11 pants look sharp but are too expensive.
I get my Tactical clothing from the Academy Clearance Rack.0 -

I know cops around here will follow people around in the malls, etc that are wearing that stuff. Just like they will follow drivers that have NRA stickers and wait for a reason to pull them over. So i don't wear that stuff and I don't put gun stickers on my cars.0 -
what the hell kind of BDUs cost a bunch and wear out in a month!?!
they are like $5 a piece. ACUs cost a bunch, but why wear those unless you have to!0 -

I say let them follow me!
I have nothing to hide, and if I give them a reason to pull me over I deserve a ticket!
As far as my gun on me I have my permit and am legal to carry it.
Around here where I'm at it is not a big deal and there are plenty of people who are permit holders and armed. The sheriffs and the local police know this and don't bother anyone unless they are doing something that they deserve to be messed with.
And if I do go outside of my local area I just make sure to comply with the laws of that area, not a big deal.0 -

You can get both there.0 -
I've had the same 4 sets of BDU for almost a year and a half and I been wearing the same uniform for the past 8 months(washing it on the weekend and whenever necessary). They're all the summer weight rip stop material and they're holding up well to my job. 0 -

cool, if something does go down they can draw fire away from me0 -
"wearing" them, yeah, they don't wear out, but using them, anything will! my GI BDU's lasted but 1 night of crawling (literally crawling) through the brush. torn up. nothing's gonna last when you're doing what you do in BDU's. 0
