Chain saw question
Im looking at getting a chain saw. I dont want electric, and it hink I was like a 16-18im blade. Something that I wont be using this all the time, just for around the home jobs. Any thoughts, and prices. Huskavarna is probably what i dont need, how are craftsmen

I've had great luck with Echo. I have one with a 10" blade, that will do 90% of the work.

The last Craftsman saw I looked at was made by Poulan. Not good. Poulan-Weedeater is the bargain basement of the two-cycle engine power tool world.

It may cost a little bit more then the average chain saw, but you can't kill em. I can not do without my Stihl. If my barn was on fire, and I could rescue anything in it before it burnt to the ground; it would be my Stihl chain saw.

Go for a husky rancher you can get it with a 16 to 20 inch bar and for a home owner it is a great deal 0 -
I have an 18" bar Craftsman, primarily because we had a Sears gift card resulting from a washer/dryer and refrigerator purchase. There are certainly better saws, but the Craftsman works fine for me cutting up fallen trees or thinning out small trees from our woods. I'm certainly not going to go out and try to take down a really large Oak tree with it. You can get carried away, so since you're not relying on the saw to make a living get one that is backed by a good warranty, has a good reputation, fits your budget, and will work for the jobs you envision it for. 0 -

craftsman 18". i have one. got me thru 4 hurricanes. best 155.00 i spent. keep it clean and oil it, last long time. im pushing 7 years with mine. starts on 3 pull.[^]

It's spelled Crapsman for a reason.
Husky, Stihl, hell even a old Echo (that's who made the John Deere saws) will cut circles around a Snears saw.

Got a 23 yr. old 20" 61cc Husky that is too much for me .. And works perfect.. bill of sale and service book..reasonable. Went with a smaller Husky that works excellent too. 0 -
I've been thru a lot of chainsaws and have to ditto the guys recommending the Echo, Sthil or Husky. Ebay is a decent place to buy the saw and extra parts for it. 0 -
For the little use you are going to give it get a cheapo what-ever brand witha 16-18 inch bar. It will still last many years and do the job.
The biggest problem is using cheap gas, run premimum in two stroke engines. If you are not going to use it for a while put some STABIL into the gas oil mix to extend storgage life.
I have a homelite for branch work and a STIL 036 PRO for more demanding jobs. Both are running strong after many years of use.
They are in good shape BECAUSE I TAKE CARE OF MY EQUIPMENT!0 -

I have a 039 3/8 chain 20" bar stihl, the new ones are labeled 390 same saw,sounds like you need a 029 farm boss w/16" [290 farm boss now i believe] like others said you will not regret it,as bpost said run high octane fuel,runs cooler and is recommended for them. Loko[:D] 0 -

For now-and-then use, just about any saw would do. 14 inch bar cuts 28 in wood- just gotta make 2 cuts. If you are doing SERIOUS cutting, then pay more. Whatever you get, go get the chainsaw sharpening attchment for a dremel, and learn to use it. Misery is trying to cut with a dull chain. Use your ear protection- durn things are louder than a ported revolver. Electric saw OK for once a year cutting up branches- but limited power, need for cords, etc. FWIW, I have a mac 14 that has cut at least 30 cords of oak and hickory- still runs and cuts good. Got it as a factory return under warranty for $78. 0 -
my dad has a homelite and seems like it doesnt have the RPM's. But like I said I need something around the home, not to cut down whole forest, something like a 16 or 18, and probably between 150-200 bucks. 0 -
I have 4 chain saws - three that are 2 stroke and one that is house power electricity.
I got a 100 foot, 14 ga extension cord from fleabay.
Since I got the electric one about 4 years ago, the gas ones are only used beyond 100 feet from the outlet.
The electric one is WAY easier to use.

Husqvarna 142 16" is what I have, love it and the wife likes it so much she wants to trim the trees with it when they need it (she's only 5.0' 115lbs and can handle it). Lowe's sells it for 199.00, friend recommended it over a lot of saws along with Echo or Stihl he was in the landscape business 15yrs in Cal. before selling out and moving to Texas. 0 -

if you get a smaller blade up to 16", make it electric. if you get 18" or more, need gas power.
I don't know what you mean by 'around the house'. if you have some firewood to cut, I'd recommend a 20", no smaller no bigger. that's handy enough for the small stuff and if you know what you're doing, you can deal with up to 3' thick trunks no problem- that should be 99% of anything you'll ever run across.0 -
Got a Stihl Farm Boss mself. Only use it a few times a year, but when I do, it's ready to cut. Keep the chain sharp, and you won't have anything to worry about. Stihl is the only way to go, IMHO. 0 -
get a small huskey. cost a little bit more than a junk saw but will last a lifetime almost. 0
