putting a scope on a ar-15
I have a dpms ar it is not a flat top ar but i want to have a scoped ar. am i better off selling the upper i have for this one and buying a flat top upper or do they do ok with a scope on the this kind. i kinda hate to sell the upper i have but i want a good coyote gun and for that i need to put a scope on this. the dpms that i have is a old one. it has a 3 digit serial number on it. i dont think these will every have any collector value to them but you never know.

just get you a mount that goes on the carry handle and if you want/need you can buy a cheeck piece for the stock to get a better alignment to the scope 0 -
I would say it depends. If you have more then one AR I would spend the money on a new upper and sell your old one if you need/want the money. If you do not have another AR I would keep the upper you have now and get a longer flat top or buy a second gun set up the way you want.
I know lots of guy do good with the 16-20" bbl guns with handle mounted scopes but you would be way better served with a 24" flat top "varmint" style gun. There are many good brands out there to choose from. I have a Bushmaster Varminiter and love it. I got mine for $1000 but that was a few years ago and I think they have gone up some. A copule local places here have them in stock and one I belive is used, but I have not checked since I have one.

I would say keep it the way it is and put on a GOOD quality carry handle scope mount. One of the best is made by Smith Ent. it is steel and has a channel to be able to use your open sights up close. GG&G makes a good one and Brownells sells their brand that works well. You want one that fits tight with no play. Check Brownells as they carry both the Smith and obviously their brand. I have shot several coyotes with my 20" DPMS. It is an A2 with a Smith ent. carry handle mount and a 4x12 scope. I have a 24" DPMS varminter and really like it but I prefer my 20" if I am moving around or shooting quickly out of the truck. 0 -
...and I sold a scope just like mateomasfeo's for about 10 bucks. so you can get a used one like that for 10 bucks if you shop around. though I wouldn't try it on anything over 200 yds, it's a plain crosshair and chinese to boot 0 -

Something tells me that the one Mateo has is a real orginal Colt and they go for way more then $10 [;)]. They are ok and I would only spend about $50 on a Colt one but they are worth some money. I got one on an AR I bought durring the AWB for $1000. Took that scope off and posted it here on GB. Sold it for $275 if I remember right.0 -

I HAVE A COLT MATCH TARGET H-BAR 6601 AND I LOOKED AROUND AND FOUND A ORIGINAL 3X9-40 DELTA ELITE SCOPE NEW IN THE BOX FROM SWFA FOR 250ISH IF I REMEMBER RIGHT INTEGRAL RINGS RUBBER COATING ETC. IT PERFORMS WELL FOR MY USE JUST MY 2 CENTS[8D] 0 -

ok, here's a side-by side comparison of masfeo's scope and the chinese scope I had. (mine has a lens cap on front)
they look pretty close (doesn't mean a thing quality-wise). my scope has a joint behind the rear mount, his scope has a joint in front of the forward mount, and the rotating ring on the back looks knurled and a little wider groove machined into it, and the whole thing looks a little shorter. so, masfeo's scope isn't a Leapers. thzt still doesn't mean it isn't chinese, gotta ask him what it is. and now y'all know how to identify a chinese made Leapers worth about 10 bucks used.0
