Howdy! And a XD vs Glock question...
Hey all--long time lurker, finally posting a question...
I've been toying with picking up a a Glock 34 (5" 9mm competion model) for a while...
But, after playing with a pal's XD yesterday, I'm beginning to reconsider. I've seen that there ARE 5" 9mm XD's available (the "tactical" model), and that I can get a lighter trigger by sending it into Springfield's custom shop. Overall, the cost would be a wash (local gunshop, which I am loyal to, would charge me $500 for a XD (and then would cost me $75+shipping to get customized), and $600 for a Glock), so, the money option doesn't weigh TOO heavily.
I own one Glock (Model 36), but no XD's--are they as nice as they seem to be?

I have had and shot both the XD and Glocks and I think they are equally good pistols.

I have a XD9 and the only thing I wish I had done different is to get the XD40. With the 40 you can interchange the 357sig and 9mm barrels. The mags all fit but you cant do that with the 9mm. 0 -
Have shot both...like both. It comes down to what feels best in your hands and the pointability.
XDs tend to point much quicker and better for my wife than me.0 -

Looks like a leaning towards the XD.
Kiwi: I'm not a .40 S&W fan; I like my 10mm Witness, but think .40 S&W is superfluous (I can download a 10mm and get the same results)...and .357 Sig, while interesting, is close enough to 9mm +P+ to not warrant the effort (I've got a HK USP 9mm that will handle +P+ with no problems).

I bought a Kahr PM9 for ultra pocketability over the thicker, blockier Glock 26. And, I paid a lot more for it, the accessories, etc. Very nice gun but it has its limitations and quirks. I still want the Glock and I plan to get one.
IMHO, straight out-of-the-box with absolutely no helping hands to refine it, it is virtually idiot-proof, a no-brainer to operate and clean, reliable, forgiving, plentiful and easily customizable on the cheap. Glocks eat just about any 9mm Luger ammunition you can buy, beg or borrow. A totally non-discriminating firearm.
I rented and shot the XD at the range on two occasions. The first was sweet and an eye-opener. I thought I wanted it over the Kahr. The second rental showed me that it was nowhere near as agreeable and forgiving as the Glock, i.e. several FTE's and FTF's during the session.
Now, the XD may, in fact, be a better-made and even a more precision-made gun, but IMHO it doesn't come close to the operability, reliability and ease of use of the Glock straight out-of-the-box. FWIW, my Kahr is quirky enough, even after a very good break-in of 600 rounds, to be a mild P-I-T-A at times, especially with JHP's. I had to buy and use Cor-Bon PowrBalls to get the first round of every mag to load into the pipe.
Just my two cents. But I'm surely no expert on guns. I still intend to buy myself a Glock. In this instance, I believe that thicker is better.0 -
I would choose the one that I could shoot with lead reloads. The Glock will not allow that with the std barrels so you have to swap out the barrel or buy something else. Just my opinion.
If I had unliminted dollars I would choose a Sig over either of the plastic pistols.0 -

Sig232--no offense, but I owned a Sig (P220), and thought it was overrated. However, I also own 3 H&K USP's (USP9mm, USP45 Compact, and USP45 Tactical), and think they aren't all they're cracked up to be, either (Can't seem to master the trigger--the P7 series, however..I LOVE!).
Slow-Hand--I've never had the opportunity to really PLAY (more that a mag or 2) with a Kahr; my friends that own/have owned them are split on a love/hate line....and, as far as I can tell, there's no 5" Kahr with rails.
Perhaps I should elaborate: I want a good, solid, bedside pistol with light rails (I have a a Surefire); while I'm not SOLD on 9mm, I lean towards 9mm for capacity, because I accept that a middle of the night gunfight would entail a LOT of poorly-aimed suppressive fire. This is my worst-case scenario; I doubt it would ever happen, but....I'd rather be wrong and over-gunned and right than under-gunned.
Or am I over-analyzing the whole situation?0 -
I have the XD 45acp Service model with a tac light on my bedside. That's 14 rds of 45. That should do you!

when given the glock v. anything question, there are so many folks here that automatically go against the glock as if it were reflex without any fair consideration to the questions.
"glock or sig" sig
"glock or sprinfield" springfield
"glock or a water pistol loaded with cat urine" water pistol
blind logicless and unfaltering support for anything but the glock. these are worthless opinions. now, opinions against the glock jusstified by experience, science or another important qualification are worth considering
i like the glock because it fits well in my hand. i like the way it points, it weight, height, width, capacity, ability to be customized. really just about eveything about it. i own several and love em all. the best advice is shoot both enough to get a feel for em(for me its no <100rds) and go from there.0 -

Which is why, WWSmith, I thought I had it made clear to go with the Glock. The 3" Kahr PM9 I alluded to was just an example of a much higher priced gun I chose to buy over the Baby Glock 26 at the time that is not as forgiving or out-of-the-box operable as the Glock 26 is.
Buy the Glock 19 if you like or the Glock 17 if you want a longer barrel. Truthfully, if it's a bedside gun, the length of the barrel shouldn't be your criteria in determining which one to buy. Consider, if you will: Reliability. Capacity. Pointability. Simplicity. Accuracy. Minimal recoil. Follow-up shots.
The Glock has no external safety to fuss with which in high stress and low light situations can be a lifesaver for you.
No matter what gun you decide upon, enjoy your purchase!0 -
I'd take the XD anyday over a Glock. I've also sold quite a few XD's. If there weren't any Kimber's, I would have a XD! They are a nice gun. 0 -

I have 2 Glocks and really like them. I was looking for a G34 as well but got a steal of a deal on a G35 so I have the .40. I have looked at the XD and my buddy has a standard sized XD45 that I shot 1 mag through. The XD is reall cool and is a great gun. I keep thinking that I will pick up an XD sometime, but there are other guns I want more.
One other big thing to keep in mind is the cost of mags. I am not sure how you are but I have a mag fetish, and I know others do here as well [:D]. XD mags seem to run about $25 each. You can pick up NEW Glock mags for about $15, and used ones on sale for about $10. Between me and my buddy we have about 25, 9mm and .40 used LE mags that came from CDNN for $9.99 and have NEVER had a problem.
If you are planning on picking up more then one or two mags that can make a big difference in price.0 -
