Don't use the NRA or Ann Coulter. They won't be seen as reliable sources, and in point of fact, they aren't.

There's a study by John Lott that you should find, read and cite. Mr. Lott set out to prove gun control worked, but in fact, proved the opposite. You should find other scientific / source driven data for your sources.

    Good luck.

    Some history.

Equating gun control with Adolph and the Nazis (and other brutal regimes throughout history) is always nice...

While the statement is factual, it is also cliched and over used. Zulu, be original.

Look through some Combat Handguns magazines for good articles and stories. One of my favorite magazines. I think they also make a Concealed Carry Magazine, but that one I have only seen once. Might not do much for reliable sources, but some of the top guys write in those magazines. They even provide examples of guns saving lives in the "It Happened to Me," section.

Check Time mag or U S News and World Report for the week or 2 after the criminal alien did the VT massacre. One of them had a comprehensive article on the positive effects of concealed carry laws. With charts and graphs.

It may be posted on the website of the mag.

sig232 got most all of them, I don't have anything to add.

except if you want a "definitive" statistic on gun crimes, maybe google "gun crime statistics" I think the FBI puts out a national report every year.

The Suzanne Hupp story is a good one to throw in too. Google it. There's a video on you tube under her name as well. We all know her story but I've been suprised at how many "non-gun" folks don't know who she is or her story.

Stay away from Man Coulter - she has yet to get any facts straight and will only harden attitudes against you.

I would also compare the two school shootings in Virginia/West Virgina - in one a student had a gun and the rampage ended almost immediately. In the other, no one had a gun (other than the lunatic) and the death toll was record-setting. The logic is very clear there.

I would also look to Penn and Teller for ideas to justify CCW laws - they're incredibly sharp and very pro-gun. Cite them as a source.

I have a relative who is a county sheriff. I was asking him questions about concealed carry and owning a firearm for protection once. He thought the public shouldn't own a firearm for protection. OK, that's his opinion from a "professional", but I notice he carries must of the time.

His action speak louder than his words. Makes me wonder about any other LEO that says the public should not be allowed to carry. What do they do?

THat muslim in Nevada that took a shotgun into a mall was brought down by a guy carrying a concealed weapon. I wonder if the FBI ever figured out why the guy did it.

That jewelry shop owner in Ft Lauderdale defended himself just this week because he was allowed to carry a concealed weapon.

Here is a quote used in reference to a citizen who may have saved many lives. This never made national news but should have. I also have the link where this quote came from. You need to find the write-up on this event in Anniston, Alabama. Compare it with the Luby's killing spree in Texas.

    http://rkba.org/users/lasvegas

Similarly, the media virtually ignored a restaurant mass
killing that was prevented by a legally armed citizen in
Anniston, Alabama. This happened soon after the mass
murders at the Luby's restaurant in Kileen, Texas. The
media used broad and dramatic coverage of the Texas
murders to support magazine and gun bans, but virtually
    ignored the incident in Alabama.

Please try to keep to the topic at hand. This is kinda important to me, as I'll be speaking to a room full of bleeding heart liberals who don't only disagree with me, but they probably don't even want to hear me speak on the subject at all.

Edit: That, and this speech is my Final Exam.

This is what I have so far:

    quote:
    Persuasive Speech: Gun Control
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." By a show of hands, how many people here know what I just read? For those of you who don't know, it is the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution, as it was written in 1787 by a man named James Madison, one of our country's founding fathers. These 220-year-old words guarantee every law-abiding free citizen of the United States of America the ability to purchase, possess, maintain, and use firearms. There are those who want to take away that right by passing laws which prohibit the purchase, even the possession, of certain types of firearms in the name of making America a safer place. Removing guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens is not only counterproductive "to the security of a free State," it is also in violation of every American's 2nd Amendment rights.

1.Removing guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens is counterproductive "to the security of a free State."

1.Just recently, Chicago IL passed a ban on firearms. No one in the city limits is allowed to own a handgun. I'd like to compare Chicago IL's crime stats to those of Kennesaw, GA, a town that in 1982 passed a city ordinance that required all residents to own and maintain at least one firearm. The most recent data avaliable is from 2005. Chicago, with a population of 2,873,441 had 448 reported murders. Kennesaw, with a population of 28,189 had 0. That's a comparison of 15.6 murders per 100,000 people to 0 per 100,000 people. It doesn't stop there. That same year, there were 15,964 reported robberies in Chicago, compared to 7 in Kennesaw. That's 555.6 robberies per 100,000 people in Chicago, and 24.8 in Kennesaw. The same applies for aggrivated assult, burglary, and vehicle theft. This fact alone proves that firearms help protect the security of a free State, but there's more:

2.Let me share with you a brief story from August 2006 where a firearm in the hands of a law-abiding citizen helped maintain the security of a free State and saved the lives of other law-abiding citizens: "SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A robbery suspect who walked into a bar with a gun ended up getting shot himself Friday morning. According to authorities, the bar owner had a gun of his own and ended up killing the suspect. This happened around 12:30 a.m., at the Old Soldier's Bar on Binz-Engleman near Kirby. The bar owner told deputies that the suspect walked in looking drugged and disoriented. When he was told to leave, the suspect pulled his gun out and demanded money. Instead of complying, the bar owner grabbed his own gun and shot the suspect twice. He died at the scene. Deputies say the bar owner does not face charges, since he was defending himself. Several other people were also inside the bar but were not hurt." This clearly shows that firearms, when used properly by law-abiding citizens can help to protect the security of a free State.

2.Removing guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens is in violation of every American's 2nd Amendment rights.

come up with the whole structure first. then fill in the talking points with your persuasive material. it doesn't look like you've done that yet.

normally you have your idea of what your speech is going to be about, and perhaps a title before you even start; but here you can cheat. it will be easier to make an outline, then fill it in with material, then come up with a title. btw, your title needs to be more descriptive. figure out a more descriptive title when you're done with the speech.

when you become adept at making speeches, writing papers or presenting the results of some kind of research, it's a lot like "saying something". your speeches will obviously sound like you're saying something, and other times, when you're just talking to someone (like here), you'll find that your speech is a lot more orderly and structured, like what you're learning to do in this class.

when you can do that, you should be able to whip out a simple speech like this in 10 minutes if it wasn't for the time spent doing research on facts & figures, because you're already aware of most of what you want to say before you even start- which is the outline. it just pops into your head. the rest is just yakking. it's that easy.
