    Yes. your right

Kayla: its -8x to the fourth.

    so -8x4

The negatives cancel. The result is as you say, but positive.

    uhm. no -, just 8x^4, (-1)(-1) = 1

in this case it would be:

    (-4x?)(-2x-?) = (-4)(-2)(x?)(x-?) = 8(x?)(x-?) = 8(x?-?) = 8x^0 = 8

    or in other notation:

    (-4x?)(-2x-?) = 8(x?)(1/x?) = 8

First multiply the variables. Then to multiply exponents you add them. The exponents cancel out leaving 8 as the answer.

I am trying to simplify (-4x?)(-2x?) does that work out to 8x? or just 8x?

it works out to 8X^4. (I don't know how to do superscripts)
2 negatives multiplied make a positive.
