    Boy, I'm sure glad I don't sit next to any of you guys in class!! But seriously, the wife is taking classes online, and we got into this big discussion concerning the answer to x+1. I say that x+1 is as low/small as you can work this problem. My know-it-all 18 yr old daughter says its 1x. Which to that I say is multiplying them.

    Catpealer's got the best answer: all real numbers. Except I think you can map x to an imaginary number....at which point x + 1 is completely unconstrained.

    Your know-it-all 18-yr-old is wrong. x+1 = 1x only if x = infinity (positive or negative)--and even then I think it's a shaky argument.

    If by saying 'x+1 is as small as you can work this problem,' you mean that the expression can't be simplified without further information about x, then you're right.

    mlincoln and Slow_Hand are also right: it is just an expression.

    just as CP said. There is no definite answer.

    x in this case is a variable.

    From the expression above, "all real numbers" is the correct answer.

    if X+1=1X, then subtract X from both sides, and you get 1=0 so that can't work.

    X+1 can be "all real numbers", also it can be any imaginary number if you put a complex number in as X. (a complex number is any term involving i, or the square root of -1) so really the term "X+1" can equal anything. which evaluates to an unconstrained variable. call it Y.

    x can be anything, all real numbers, imaginary numbers, some logic expression, the number of bong hits...anything. At stated it is only the grounds for a philosophical discussion. Now if we complete the statement to x+1=y and define y then we can solve.

    Staying away from the philosophical discussions the best solution for the problem is that x=y-1.

    x+1 is not a problem, so there is no solution.

    For your daughter's benefit..
    1x is multiplication as you told her. In this case 1x=x. So 1x is not equal to x+1. It's equal to (x+1)-1.[:D]
