...John Browning knew what kind of following he'd get when he designed the 1911? Do you think it was supposed to be one of the most successful autoloader pistols in the world?

  Never shot one. Know very little about the guy, but I know he was a genius. I suspect he knew he created a masterpiece, but then again he designed a lot of guns and patents that have lasted the test of time.

  Isn't it true he intentionally over complicated the Hi Power so he wouldn't just make a 9mm copy of the 1911? I read that somewhere.

  was it supposed to be "one of the most successful autoloader pistols in the world"? I'm sure he worked on it best as he could, and being no such pistol in existence to date, he probably thought it would be successful at least until something better came along.
  
  as far as a "following", there weren't any such phenomena back then, like what you have with Cold Steel products, ranting over AK's, etc. things were "popular". it was a different world back then, people weren't led around by the nose by their consumeristic habits.
