Only thing wrong is, those people would still be the same "without" welfare.
Positive is a good thing though![8D]

The sad fact is that many hard working people are below the poverty line where wages are concerned, military included. Separating hard working folks from the lazy ones, for one, seems to present a big problem for our government officials to overcome. Another is corporations, for example, that take advantage of their employees, college educated included. In my mind, some regulation of big business is absolutely necessary, even in a capitalist society - especially so if we are going to retain a large middle class of people.

Here it is: a perfect example of socialist-democrat conditioning.

welfare is good for the ones that truely need it. the people that abuse it are the one's that we should've been bashing. we should also be proud to live in a country that offers this kind of help for it's citizens! that's my spin, take it for what it is!

It keeps the dumb people dumb, the lazy people where they deserve to be, and reduces competition for jobs that require more than a heartbeat to qualify for.

    Mind you, I'm not pro-welfare, but I figured I'd think positive for a change.[:p][:D][;)]

I take it you've never been hurt with no disability and no insurance and kids to feed.
Walk a mile in those shoes and you won't be dissin' everybody with your smart a$$ remarks. As soon as I got back on my feet I went back to work and except for those 6 months I've worked 50 years out of 65 and I"M STILL WORKING>[:)][:)][:)]

Kimi is dead on. Say what you want and spin it as you want, but without some control what we will end up with is a feudal system. I think that has been proven not to work.

I have, previously, stayed out of the debate on welfare. I have very strong opinions, as do most of you, on this subject. I am not generally "pro-welfare." However, there are people in our country who need assistance, regardless whether it is due to their health, their mental capacity, or their current circumstance. There are numerous examples of those who have used the welfare system properly to obtain marketable skills or to educate themselves and become productive members of our society. There are also many examples of explotation of the system. The system contains rules that should minimize the explotation. However, they are not always strictly enforced.

IMHO, it is wonderful that this country has the financial ability to assist those that "need" assistance. I, for one, will never complain about my $$$ going to assist those that actually need the help. I do complain (loudly and often) about those who are receiving assistance and are not in process of improving their prospects for the future. The multigenerational propagation of "welfare families" is far beyond my level of tolerance. Personal exposure to some of the "New Orleans refugees" was a sickening experience. Daily observation of some of our "locals" in this small town is about as bad. However, neither of these situations should dictate elimination of the system.

Rather proper administration of the system is a better answer. Help the ones that really need it and do a better job of helping them that we currently are doing. Cut off those that are able bodied and are not currently successfully pursuing a new skill or an education (in the process of preparing themselves for a better future).

In this small town we have a significant percentage of the population who receives assistance in one form or another. Too many of the girls start shelling out babies at 13 or 14 yrs of age and keep doing it for many years. These single girls with babies cannot earn a living for themselves and their children. Therefore, they draw welfare. The children are raised with that mentality --- it is an entitlement --- there is no shame associated with receiving public assistance --- everyone in their social class receives it --- there is no end to this circle. I am certainly not intelligent enough nor influential enough to solve this problem. However, this is, IMHO, the problem that needs to be resolved.

Fortunately, in this country we do not declare "open season" on them. We do, however, need a system (or a society) that substantially discourages this behavior. When I was a teenager (before the advent of birth control pills), an unmarried pregnant girl or woman was a social outcast. It was unacceptable to our society (then). If an accident did occur, there was a quick marriage or the young lady went to "stay with her aunt" for a period of time. People thought a little more about those issues than they do today. We had much less of the problem previously described.

Then came the late 60s, 70s, etc. Permissiveness, free love, etc. took over. Today, the high schools and even the junior highs are full of pregnant girls (and we now have very effective birth control alternatives). The answer is obvious to me. What about you?

The most effective birth control mechanism in the world is a quarter. As long as she holds it between her knees, she is not likely to have any problem. I am not sure that the young men today are any different than we were. My opinion is the female is always (and has always been) in control. If that control is not exercised, unfortunate consequences likely will result. Our society needs to become less permissive.

sneakyrussian: If you need help in ascertaining the "problem" and "key word" in my previous post then you need to work on it until you understand there is a need to help some people and not others. I am convinced that our state and federal government could solve the vast majority of abuse in assistance programs, however too many of our elected officials treat this problem like they do many others, like our current immigration and border security problems. Also, if you believe that pure capitalism would be considered workable by many people then you would make good company for the extreme far right lunatics.

I think in any society there are always people that will need assistance. (welfare).

I'm OK with that, if they will take a hair follicle test to prove they aren't on drugs --- and have the tester pull a random hair out of their head to eliminate the "using somebody's clean urine" to pass a drug test.

Thank Kimi for bringing my point across loud and clear. I have nothing to add or comment or respond, as I earlier already stated that it's utterly stupid to argue or discuss matters of one's faith.

Read your postings, not a damn thing you have said makes the least bit of sense...with the exception of the "pretty" comment. [:)]

I know of college kids with children who were on food stamps back in the day and after graduation worked for many years, "contributing" and paying tons of taxes. If they would have been allowed to starve to death we would be worse off today, and helping them in their time of need turned out to be a pretty good investment. Some folks need a little help. Some folks don't, and just live off the system their whole lives. It's just not that easy to tell them apart from way off wherever those kinds of rules are made.

And then you have the whole "vote factory" issue...
