they will go the way of the big auto makers,they will have to drop plants or go south of the border to get rid of the unions,,,unions have killed the american auto industry and if Harley is not careful unions will shut their doors also.. 0 -

Funny thread! I don't see Harley sales slipping at all look at the statistics. They are making good profits in spite of their pricing.
As the baby boomers continue to retire, all 60+ million of them, they will be looking for hobbys and fun things to do. Many of them will continue to buy Harleys and other bikes to enjoy their time off.
They dress up in the proper leather clothing to protect themselves in the event of a fall. Harley is big on promoting safety and will build a strong case for protecting your skin.
I am in a HOG chapter in Portland with over 400 members and there are only a handfull that think they are Badazzes. That handfull have been riding harleys for many years and they are badazzes! I know Yamaha and Honda riders that are even more Badazz than the handfull of Harley bad dudes.
The majority of Harley riders are just riding to enjoy the outdoors, the backroads of Oregon and doing something a bit different from riding in a closed auto with the AC running.
I have owned Hondas, Yamaha, BMWs and this is my first Harley. A 2005 softail deluxe. I find it to be built like a tank. Very strong, 700+ lbs, faster than most cars and reliable as anything out there today. Our club has rides which include 50-60 bikes each weekend and breakdowns are rare. To put 100K on a Harley is common, so they are a quality product.
It remains to be seen if Harley will be able to control its labor cost and remain competitive with other brands. So far they out sell all other brands combined and no matter how hard Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Honda try to build bikes to copy Harley, buyers are still flocking to HD showrooms willing to pay a premium for their bikes. In fact I know many folks who buy one softail and then buy another touring bike.
I think their challenge is coming from Victory! Another high priced American mfg that is offering one heck of bike for less money. Their entry into the business has forced Harley to produce the 96" engine and six speed tranny recently. Look for more changes to keep pace with Victory.
Riding motorcycles of any type is a fun hobby (sport). Its dangerous out there among the cars and trucks but if you ride with care and watch yourself you will discover a whole new world that you have never experienced before.0 -
Once again, people pounding their gums on a topic they know nothing about. Some fool claiming Harleys cost "three times more than they're worth." [:D][:D] I'm paying $20,400 out the door for my new ElectraGlide but "acdodd" thinks it's only worth 1/3 of that amount, or $6800. Right! My guess is that ol' acdodd, at his $8/hour job, couldn't save up the money to buy one even if they WERE $6800.
I always make a point of asking people who badmouth Harleys what THEY ride. The majority of them don't ride anything and most of the remainder ride some POS, worn-out, 3rd hand, 750cc Jap machine that's falling apart.
Anyone who thinks Harleys are grossly overpriced hasn't checked prices on Jap or European machines lately.
My 16-year-old FXRS Conv has over 90,000 trouble-free miles on it and I could sell it today for 80% of what I paid for it in 1991. Let's see you do that with ANY other brand of motorcycle.
