Have you shoot 200 yards with a 22?
Now be honest. Is this even possible. I went out to my granpas for dinner and decided to bring my 10/22 and give it a try. I've been getting alot of "it's impossible" to "it's very unlikely".
My granpa went out with me and all I hear was it can't be done the bullet would drop too fast, let alone the wind.
I'll admit when I took my first shot and it hit almost 4 feet below my crosshairs. I thought no way. It is impossible. So I adjusted my scope and it bottomed out and I was still hitting around 2 feet below my crosshairs.
I had a bunch of different 22's. I had Winchester, Federals, Eley, CCI's, and Aguila. All were 40grain, except the Aquila, which were 30. The Winchesters were more accurate than any of the others at 100 yards or less, but still dropped the same at 200 yards. The Aquila's only dropped a half the distance at 200. So Aquilas will be my bullet to use.
After I figure out my rate of drop and where I have to aim, almost 2 feet above the bullseyes. I managed to hit the paper 2 out of 10 times. I wish you could of seen my granpa's face when I hit it the first time, then the very next shot was a hit also.
So now I've figure out I can adjust the crosshairs alot more than I had them and that Aquila makes a 20 grain bullet. I'm going to give it another try with the 20 grainers and adjustments to my scope. I also think I'm going to have to go to bean bags and not a tri-pod.
I think it can be done, but it's going to be a hard shot and my goal will have to the 5 shots 5 inches or less and not the 3 inches of less I was hoping for.
Have any of you done this? If so how and what kind of bullet did you use.

I'll have to get a .22 first... 0 -
Uhhhh...no. 0 -
I have never shot any of my .22 beyond 125 yards and I would be surprised if it is possible. 0 -
fwiw, I don't think its not impossiable!
It sounds like you need a tapered base to give you more elevation.
Keep in mind, you'll just be lobbing at that distance, kinda like shooting a mortor.
A very very very tiny mortor [:D]0 -
But the box says caution "Range 1 Mile"[:D][:D] 0 -
yes we shot 300 yards with a 22, put the rear sight about half way down the barrel, and we hit a 5 gallon bucket quite regularly. 0 -

I know, My granpa said he could see the bullet it was moving so slow. But I hate being told something can't be done. I will do this and I'm going to this using the Ruger. My granpa recommended a CZ, but I think at this point it's finding the right bullet and not the right rifle.0 -

It was a blast I had an old stevens 87a and we took turns, we both got the range eventualy then it was pop................................................................................tunck 0 -
Remington 540x with 25x Lyman Supertargetspot. Sighted at 100 yd. 78 clicks on elevation to put her dead on at 200. Standard Velocity only goes thru this gun. You can actually shoot and wait to hear the impact out to 200. Calm wind and it will shoot peanut butter lids at 200yd off the bench.

I have shot alot of rock chucks at 150-200 yards with my scoped 9422. You shoot and then wait to hear the impact. 0 -
we shoot 240 yrds off the back deck regularly, beer soda cans are difficult, 12" squard plate is easy. we shoot just about everything from my 52 win. and 40x rem. (90%+ on them beersoda cans). the boys (3) all have mossberg 44's from the cmp. this type of shooting teaches you a lot about bullet drop/wind drift besides being lots of fun. 0 -
I've popped birds, rabbits and varmints at over 200 yards with a 22 mag. 0 -
I shoot 200 yards with a 22 routinely at my home range. Many thousands of rounds have gone down range at that distance. Most is shot offhand; I can hit clay targets with regularity. A 4 power scope is all I use on a Glenfield bolt action rifle. The ammo is Winchester white box from Walmart. 0 -
Mark Wahlberg did it, so of course its possible [:D] 0 -
Used to when I was a kid - for fun - probably rarely ever hit anything.
Now when using .22 WRFs ... that was another story. They were effective at that
range.

Oh hell with it -- I've shot my .22 at way over 200 yards. I can even guarantee that I've hit something with it, just haven't got a clue what and at what distance [:p] 0 -
One of the outdoor ranges I use has 12" steel plates at 225yds, and we regularly spank them with a 10-22 and a Marlin so old, it doesn't have a model number or serial.
The hardest part of shooting that diminutive a caliber at that great a range is finding a scope with 40" of travel in elevation.0 -
Wolf has some pretty good match ammo in 22 that a lot of our guys are using. 0 -
My Savage 93fv in 22 magnum shoots little groups at 50 yards, puts 40grn hollow points (CCI Maxi Mag) about 2" high at 100 yards and about 5" low at 200 yards, which works out to where the thick part of my crosshairs start on the scope. Can break skeet/trap clays at 200 yards on the berm all day long.... Did I mention that I really like my savage?
I think you'll want to not use the aguilla 20 grainers... the box of 'em I picked up the other day says "primer only no powder" - more of a gallery load...0 -
does a .222 count if so yes several times and further 0 -
Sheppard makes a scope with a range finding reticle, that is calibrated for the 40 grain HV 22LR load. They are amazing. It will improve your hit ratio at 200 yards dramatically. 0 -

Have I shot 200 yards with a .22? Yes. Successfully? No. I don't typically take shots with a .22 any further than 100 yards with iron sights, maybe 150 yards with a scope. The drop on a .22 long rifle projectile is quite obvious beyond 150 yards. Besides, what would you be shooting at that far out with a .22? [:0]
Unicorns, of course.
DUH. You can't shoot them if they see or smell you. Sheesh, don't you know anything?0 -

I'll lay money it was the ground.
Hell, I've shot a .22 over four miles and hit ground before.0 -
Yes, I have. It is fun to walk your rounds into something from that range. A little Kentucky windage and skill, is all that is needed.[;)] 0 -
That is not that hard to imagine... I shoot my bow accuratly to 100 yards. No reason any firearm can't shoot double that. 0 -
There is a BPCR silhouette match here is CA that shoots 22LR at 200 yards, it really isn't that hard, all you have to do is compensate for bullett drop at range. 0 -
My 10-22 was sighted in at 100, but I never had a reason to shoot it much farther than 50 yards.
Trinity +++0 -
haven't shot a target at 200 yards, but I did shoot a duck with a 22 pistol, nubby sights and all, about 50 yards. try that. 0
