Former jailer to learn fate for stabbing death of wife

A former Hunt County jailer is scheduled to learn this morning whether he will be sentenced to prison for the stabbing death of his wife.
Michael Dale Vice of Wolfe City was charged with one count of murder in connection with the death of Arline Vice and in July entered a plea of guilty to the charge and faces a maximum sentence of up to life in prison.
A punishment hearing is set for 10 a.m. today in the 354th District Court.
Hunt County District Attorney F. Duncan Thomas has said there was no plea agreement in the case and that his office was seeking the maximum sentence.
As Vice had never before been convicted of a felony, he would be eligible for deferred adjudication probation, should Beacom sentence him to 10 years or less in prison.
Deferred adjudication carries no finding of guilt, although those defendants who are found to have violated a deferred probation are subject to being sentenced to the maximum punishment.
Vice has remained in custody in the Collin County Jail in McKinney in lieu of $1 million bond since the May 28, 2004 incident.
Arline Vice was stabbed to death that afternoon in the 2600 block of Eastland Street in Greenville following a argument with her husband. Her body was found in front of the business where she had been employed.
The murder weapon, a box cutter, was found near the body and recovered.
Vice, who had worked as a corrections officer at the Hunt County Jail for seven years prior to the murder, fled the scene in a pickup truck which a short time later was involved in a collision with a utility pole along U.S. Highway 69 north of Greenville. Vice received minor injuries in the crash.

Michael Dale Vice was sentenced Monday to 40 years in prison for the murder of his wife.
The former Hunt County Jailer took the witness stand during his sentencing hearing and testified that on the day Arline Vice was killed, he originally planned to take his own life.
Instead, Vice said he traveled to where Arline Vice worked in Greenville and confronted his wife about her plans to leave him.
"I hit her, I wasn't intending to, but I did," Vice said, adding he then reached into his pocket where he found a box cutter he had purchased earlier that day. "So I used it."
Vice, of Wolfe City, entered a plea of guilty In July to one count of murder. A punishment hearing was held Monday in the 354th District Court.
As Vice had never before been convicted of a felony, he would have been eligible for probation if sentenced to less than 10 years in prison, to up to a life prison sentence.
During the hearing, Vice's son, Matthew, asked Judge Richard A. Beacom to spare his father the maximum punishment.
"He made a mistake, which we all do," he said. "He deserves what he gets, but I don't think it should be life."
"This is a tragic situation for everyone involved," said Hunt County District Attorney F. Duncan Thomas. "Mrs. Vice and the defendant had a 19-year-old son who no longer has a mother or a father."
Vice has remained in custody in the Collin County Jail in McKinney since the May 28, 2004 incident.
Arline Vice's throat was cut that afternoon in the 2600 block of Eastland Street in Greenville following an argument with Michael Vice. Her body was found in front of the business where she had been employed. The box cutter was found near the body.
Vice testified he originally planned to kill himself and allow his wife to find his lifeless body.
Vice then told the court he went to question his wife as to why she had been staying away from their home on the weekends, at which time he said Arline Vice told the defendant she no longer loved him.
Witnesses who testified Monday described how Michael Vice approached his wife, knocked her to the ground and then used the blade to repeatedly slash the victim.
Monday, Vice appeared in court still dressed in his orange jail uniform and chains. Often weeping as he spoke, he apologized to his son and Arline Vice's family for what he had done.
When asked by defense attorney Russell Brooks what sentence he thought he should receive, Vice replied, "I deserve the worst."
Vice said he felt he should receive the death penalty, which was not an option in the case, then asked for the mercy of the court.
Vice, who had worked as a corrections officer at the Hunt County Jail for seven years prior to the murder, fled the scene in a pickup truck which a short time later was involved in a collision with a utility pole along U.S. Highway 69 north of Greenville. Vice received minor injuries in the crash.
Vice will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least 20 years of his sentence. Given the time he has already been in custody, the soonest Vice would be eligible to be released would be June, 2024.

i just recieved a phone call a few minutes ago about my friend. this morning about 6:00 am, he was taking his 11 year old son deer hunting. about 6:30 am he was shot. he took a round through his right side. it exited his left upper torso,just missing his son by inches, but covering the boy with his fathers blood. the shooter was only 30 yards away. the shooter tried to perform cpr but was useless. the father was not hunting and had no orange on. the shooter was arrested. that is all the info i have. my friend who called was really upset and i did not want to ask her any questions. i ask that you please send your prayers 0 -
