    If my old pappy were alive, he would give you a very good rating on his old 742 Remington 742 that is sitting in my son's gun safe right now. There is no telling how many deer he and I harvested with it. It is a very reliable shooter, but has been retired for many years now. The secret, in my opinion, is to get a magazine that will feed well and the gun likes. My dad was a lefty and it was compatable with him and the way he shot and jams were few and far between. Especially with Remington Corelock. Don't know why but the jams he experienced came with Winchester Silvertip......Anyway, I'm rambling. IMHO, this is a very reliable old weapon if kept clean and treated right.............[:)][:)]

    Design flaws asside, the carbine length is pretty handy in the brush and in a tight deer stand. They also bring a pretty good premium over the standard length 742's.

    I just don't like the Rem. 742. The carbine isn't a better gun to me....just a smaller, less common version of the original thing (that I don't like) with an added $50 to the price tag.

    FWIW, My brother has a 742 that has never reliably fed any ammo, it's been back to Remington at least twice with no improvement, tried different mags to no avail, and keeps it because he says he wouldn't do even a stranger that dirty. Bear in mind this is one rifle, maybe it's a rare freak.

    Do a GB search for Remington 742 on the expert side and you'll see why.

    I have a 742 BDL (Woven pattern) that my Father bought new in the 70's.
    I have never known it to have any problems. He hunted with it for many years before retiring it.

    Being use to hunting with Featherweights. It does seem heavy to carry all day.

    Love my ole 742 carbine. 20 + yrs in the woods with it and never a problem...just recently put some period Leupold glass on it so I can see what I'm shootin and it is more fun than ever..

    Keep it clean and oiled and have fun..

    Have both the standard length and carbine. Very good guns for the woods. Never have had problems with them, but what do I know after almost 30 years with them.
    My carbine shoots just a good as the standrd. Keep it clean and lightly oiled and it should perform as needed.
