Rat Poison
Does anyone know of a good rat poison that is not secondary kill?
i know most poisons are ok but are secondary kill.

warfin, is the same as cumadin is a secondary kill it is used in most rat poisons however when it kills rats and mice if a dog or cat eats the rat it will kill the them also. 0 -
Warfarin (Cumadin) can have a secondary kill if the animal is eaten by another. While tests where test animals were fed meat from rabbits killed by warfarin but not including gut contents have concluded Warfarin has no or low secondary kill, real world experience indicates cats eating warfarin killed mice can indeed die. 0 -

Straight cumadin? I think commercial poisons also contain cyanide, or strychnine too.0 -
What ever happened to a good-ole trap,with a piece of raw bacon, and some p-nut butter?

The active ingredient in rat poison is brodifacoum, which is sometimes referred to as a super-warfarin, because it is longer acting than the drug warfarin. It is both odorless and tasteless. It is effective when mixed with food bait, because the rodents will return to the bait and continue to feed over a period of days, until a lethal dose is accumulated. 0 -

What about a flavored dose of the medication? Does the medical grade stuff carry the same secondary poisoning characteristics?0 -
i didn't mean cumadin was the only poison used in rat and mouse poison. they eat the poison some ingredent makes it sick (rodents can't throw up) the warfin stops the blood from clotting, their guts rupture and they bleed internally and die. "so what i've read on the internet about how it kills" then if a dog or cat,owl or other bird eats the rodent it will kill the animal.
i had a beagle die from eating a poisioned rat.0 -
i'm surrounded by weeded fields and since it has turned cool at night rats are getting in under and into my storage building,the building is close to my fenced back yard where my dogs stay. if a poisoned rat gets in there and one eats it it will kill them.
fishkiller, there are too many to just use a rat trap. these are norway rats or if from the south gofer rats. some get as big as a squirrel.they also sometimes get under my house. i called a pest control company they want 500.00 to put out glue paper,and won't gurantee to get rid of them.0 -
What about a 1/2 dozen cats? Those are some big rats, so poisoning is probaly out. Any dose would have a secondary poisoning effect. Although, what about Everclear? If something else at the rat, it'd probaly just get a good buzz. 0 -
1st about the cats, these gofer rats will win a fight with a cat. most cats around here won't mess with them. As to the snakes, i can take the rats better than the snakes. heck i'd hurt myself bad if i saw a snake close to me. my wife would have a heart attack. she's scared of bugs. there's not much that scares me besides buggers and haints but a snake is on top of the list. 0 -
We have a problem with wood rats from time to time, disgusting creatures...
I don't know what it's called, but it's industrial grade and it is a green rectangular block.
Since I have a cat, I put the block at the bottom of a big jar with an opening too small for a cat to fit it's head through (old water-cooler bottles work great), and I put the jar near a water source.
Voila! No more rat problem....0 -

Some years ago a friend had rat problems in a chicken house. We would go into the brooder room, drop an albino ferret (to distinguish it from the rats) on the floor, stand back to back with .22 semiautos and shoot the rats as they boiled out of the burrows. When the smoke got too much to see through we would go out and breathe real air. Never got them all, but kept the numbers way down, and it was good practice, involved guns and there were no closed seasons. 0 -

I have been told by two or three different pest control people that, since rats can't burp, if you keep fresh coke (or, I guess other carbonated beverages) out, they will drink it and it will kill them by retained gas. They like it because it's sweet. I guess it would work, but it would be a real pain to keep coke out in a heavily infested area. 0 -

Take a coke bottle, put it in a flour sack, smash it into fine shards, pour the fine shards into the rat holes.
The rats will clean themselves, ingest the glass, and die.

-I have the same issues with poisoning rodents around my place. I don't want the hawks, eagles, bobcats, coyotes, etc. to consume them and die.
Here's a good way I thought of to take them out. I hatched this up when I saw, after a rain, a couple mice dead in a bucket I had left out.
In your case, if you have some good-sized rats, you might want to use something larger than an 18-quart bucket. Probably a 15-gallon trash can or a 20-gallon muck bucket/tub, etc.
Anyway, I used the bail on the bucket, so you might have to rig something up. I hung the bait (peanut butter mixed up with bread) on a string tied to the bail and hanging down in the middle. Then I rigged up a pivoting thin, narrow "plank" about an inch or inch-and-a-half wide leading out to the bait hanging in the air over the center of the bucket. Of course, the plank is rigged so that once the rat gets out there a ways, it tilts down quickly and dumps his ass into the bucket.
I put a few inches of water in the bucket and leaned a board up against it under the plank. The mice run up the board, maybe run around the rim of the bucket, then try their luck on the plank.
Don't take the drowned ones out of the bucket unless they start gagging the maggots. It seems to attract more mice. It works here fore me.0 -

I used a similar method for mice. A 5 gallon bucket, bait, and a plank. Dug a small hole to sit the bucket in. Would get 20-30 mice in one night, until I got them pretty much cleared out. (raised birds outside, had LOTS of mice)0 -
I use tried-and-true mouse traps, and if the bugger ain't dead when I find him, he/she and the trap get dropped on a kicked-over fire ant mound. 0 -

I called the number on the Lowe's rat poison label and asked the lady that same question. I was more concerned about killing hawks and blacksnakes. She told me every effective rat poison on the market is a secondary killer and if I didn't want to kill the hawks and snakes, use traps. The Victor Rat Traps, 12 gauge shotgun and .357 seem to be pretty effective. 0 -
Sounds like some good bait a .22 and some time to kill (no pun intended) is all that is needed.[8D] 0 -
