Yesterday was fun :(
Got up early to go to haul, hadn't been since Monday.
Got about 1/4 mile from the mooring and the boat slipped out of gear. Got it to go back in and hobbled to the mooring.
Checked the reduction gear and found NO OIL. It hasn't been checked for a long time because it is almost inaccesible. Filled it with oil and everything was fine.
Went back to haul, lasted about 30 minutes and lost gear again. Checked the oil and there was none. Put more oil in and hightailed it for home.
Looking behind the boat could see the problem. Was leaving a nice sheen on the water, basically pumping the oil overboard.
Got to the mooring and took the reduction gear cooler off and had a new cooler fitted with my fittings.
So spent half the day working on the engine and running around. Out about $300 and caught 1 lobster.
I feel stupid for not checking the cooler the first time. Just figured I had a slow leak on the reduction gear itself. Still kicking myself that I didn't figure it out first.
