Foul Language - Where next?

I work next door to a lady that is complaining to me about the really foul language used in her department. I told her the steps to go through reporting a "hostile work enviornment" but she is reluctant to follow them as one of the chief cussers is her boss. I suggested going up the ladder one more notch and start there. Before she goes there, what is the agency that would have juristiction over something like this? EEOC, labor board???? She needs reassurance that there is someone who will listen past her boss and his. Thanks!

    First,I would ask her how bad she wants/likes/needs that job, because if the boss' overlord gives him/her flak and he/she finds out who ratted him/her out, he/she could make the workplace a much more unpleasant and hostile environment than the objectionable language created.

    She has considered that. I don't know what to tell her or how bad she needs that job. It's her call but thought I'd get some input for her from you guys.

    If her boss is the owner of the company, then there isnt much she can do....and in all honesty, I doubt very much anything will be done anyways, cause its language that is used every day, by almost everyone from seniors to little kids....

    EEOC will not do anything.. if its her boss she might as well tune it out if she wants her job, otherwise go to the supervisor and complain. but be prepared to get fired.

    Just be careful she isn't trying to draw you into her little work-place drama, causing trouble for you....
    There are a couple work-place drama queens in every office, best not to get yourself tied up with them.

    I don't work in her department her so I won't be drawn in. The language is not TV cussing but really nasty. She works at a large box store.

    All the same, you could get a reputation as a troublemaker, which is something that does not bode well with supervisors, even if yours is not hers, I'm sure they talk, and if they don't they will.

    Define, "nasty"? I mean is it simply foul language, or is it personally degratory and abusive?
    Also, she has to take into account what workplace she has gotten herself into. While "hell" and "damn" are frowned upon in my workplace, if I accepted a job working, say, with my Mike's oilfield counterparts, I would have to expect to hear much worse, and could not reasonably expect them to correct their habit on my account.

    tell her to file a sexual harrasment complaint. they won't be able to do anything to her. if they fire her she can sue for discrimination, and they are guilty until proven inocent. been there.

    Not necessisarilly. In order to file a sexual harassmant claim, first, the filer must have documentation that they confronted the harasser with a statement, verbal or otherwise, of objection to their action or language. Only then can a harassmant suit be filed. At least that is the way it is in my state.

    while in the Air Force, must admitt I was just as bad.
    But we got a baptist preacher in the shop.
    He would get turned sideways, But you cant change overnight.
    I was in alot of pain, when I did fall, my mouth was the last thing I had in check. bother the hell out of him.

    It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. "Hostile work environment" would be very hard to prove and complaints may have repercussions. The lady should first let it be know that the language is offensive and then be patient. Foul language is a hard habit to break. I knew a guy once who would start saying the Lord's Prayer when a co-worker would use the Lord's name in vain. This seemed to help.

    Tell her to grow a pair and tell them to watch their language. It only takes one time - and do it in front of the bosses boss or have a witness and if nothing is done then take it up the ladder and have a witness. If you are offended by any other co-workers actions or language you have to let them know before you go anywhere. I get tired of the people who
    1. are offended by the slightest little things - yet don't confront the perp. with a witness
    2. go running to the boss and stirring up a mess without trying to tell others to tone it down.
    3. don't know how to tell the boss to f-off and get away with it!!!!!

    Penn and Teller did a good skit on cussing. You had to laugh when examples of words were said to the man (or woman) on the street. Some laughed, some got flustered. All over syallables and sounds.

    I wonder if the woman will be so offended and consider it worth it after she has caused everyone grief and is no longer employed? People seldom think far enough ahead to see the ramifications of their stupid actions.

    If it's not acceptable in a courtroom, it is not acceptable at work! I don't like to have to listen to that stuff either, so when I hear it now I just sink to their level, to the point that it makes them cry.[}:)]

    and I really hate the queer jokes at work especially when queers are the ones telling them.
