Here's our take. My wife is profesional dog groomer w/15 yrs experience. She runs the longest in operation and busiest shop in our area. And she says that the Four Paws and Hartz stuff that you buy in grocery stores is CRAP.You might as well buy snake oil. They are not strong enough to be of much help.
Flea baths help get rid of fleas. We use Frontline to keep them off. Make sure you get the right dose for your dogs size. It's more expensive (we have to buy ours for 2 dogs/1 cat also), but WORTH IT.

According to our vet (the breeders vet) frontline is CRAP....I have used frontline and found it did nothing for my cats...Advantage works well, but I prefer something natural for my own...I bathe them regularily, give garlic in their food and use advantage as well...This is Florida and fleas are really bad here so you hit them with all you can, hence the brewers yeast and garlic along with advantage..

If Hartz is so bad, then why does the flea spray for the house work so well?...even kills the palmetto bugs that will run in the cattery...

Hartz is not bad. It's very potent. Rough on the pet's constitution. Joe

EDIT: Also, after thinking, Harts Q/C is erratic. Overdose, then weak dose. Poor control over what % active ingredients are really in the box. Joe

Only used Frontline Plus on my dogs for years. Not ever a problem with fleas.

I've used frontline on my other rotts, had no problems with fleas or ticks, but I heard it has killed pets from kidney failure; tried it on Stormy and the first time it made her really sick, I'm not going to touch the stuff again.

you know, some parts of the country have more fleas than others. maybe yeast & garlic work well enough where there isn't much of a flea problem, but not where it does so you wouldn't think it works.

I use frontline on the dog and 3 cats. Never a single flea.

I use Seven for the yard. Still never a flea.

A little Sevin dust sprinkled down the dog's back and never a problem.
    Cheap too.

four dogs and three cats we use frontline and have not had a problem. My black cat will loose all her hair and get scabs all over her if she is bitten by a flea,so i keep everyone medicated every month.
Now I have heard that sometimes frontline doesnt work on some cats or dogs but advantage does and vice-versal.

I believe that. Our Vet was out of Frontline and we got some Advantage instead, found a couple fleas on them a month later.

Went back and got some Frontline, took care of it.

I planted fleabane and garlic all over my yard. I also put powdered garlic on their wet food. It works good and without the nasty insecticides that kill off beneficial bugs. A nice summer day and I see ladybugs, wasp, praying mantis and at evening, the lightening bugs are all over the place. The preditor bugs take care of the beetles, worms, and aphids just fine.
