Need Advice on Riding Lawn Mowers
I need a riding lawn mower. Not sure what they cost but would like to keep it around $2000 if possible.
Would appreciate any comments from owners on brands, models, what to avoid, what to look for, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Just purchased a new rider this year. Wanted to go with John Deere, but they have left the good engines behind and now use Briggs and Stratton. For the long haul, I much prefer a Kohler engine. Since Cub Cadet has a Kohler engine, three year warrantee instead of two year, and has a solid built mower for the same money as a Deere, it is Cub Cadet for me. I already have about 20 hours on mine and love it. 0 -
My 88 JD had the cast iron Kohler engine and its still running and cutting grass great. Kohler is a great engine, but so is Kawasaki. The only place ive seen the briggs is on the lowes JD. In my opinion JD sorta sold out when they used there green and yellow colors on the cheaper lowes models. 0 -
If you're looking to go heavy duty, let me know, my company owns Jacobsen lawn mowers, mostly I think they make golf course and commercial stuff, but check out the site and let me know. I think I get something like a 20% discount on them.

$2,000???
TIGHT-BUTT!!!!
For a lot your size, consider a John Deere 300 Series or 400 Series. I needs to be a liquid cooled engine. Gas or Diesel. If it's used don't be afraid of 1,000 hours.0 -
I have a Huskee (Tractor Supply) with 20 hp engine and 50 inch cut, that I have literally beaten to death for the last 8 years or so, and it just keeps on plugging. I use it for everything; mowing, hauling, pulling trailer, skidding logs, pulling down dead trees, etc. I really need a real tractor but this one will have to do for now. 0 -

I vote for an old Massey. I've been using one for years. Its up for a restore next. Or an older Economy would be a good choice.
I have newer mowers, but parts for newer mower are hard to find, unless you go to a dealer than your looking at a high price.
I just love tinkering with the old mowers.
I wish I had a better pictures, but my camera is at the bottom of a very big lake.
IS THAT SNOW CHAINS ON YOUR LAWN MOWER?[?][?]0 -
Can't go wrong with john deere.I have mine for 12 years and I put and hour meter on it.It has 200 hours on it.I've had to replace i mower deck belt and 1 tire that's it!Of course oil, lube ,filter
every year.My rig cost $6,000.I had a Wheel horse before that for 13
years and it was no where near as heavy as the J.D and it cost half the money. There's an old saying you get what you pay for!0 -
I bought my John Deere about 4 years ago. Only had one slight problem that I will explain (really easy to fix).
My second year with it the engine would stall after running for about 10 minutes. If I let it sit for about 1 hour it would crank up again, run 10 minutes and then stall. I figured it was the gas filter, so I changed it. Still had the same problem after changing the gas filter.
I called the dealer I bought it from and they told me it was the gas filter. So I changed the filter again, but after 10 minutes of running it would stall. Then I noticed what was wrong. The air vent on the gas cap was clogged and the gas tank was being imploded until it could not implode any more. I took the gas cap off, blew it out with an air hose, replaced it and has worked fine ever since.
Go with the John Deere.0 -
You can get a hell of a Craftsman lawn tractor for less than $2000.

Home Depot sells the Cub Cadet line -- they're the best available in my opinion - but they do cost more. 0 -
I have the same tractor Nunn has, and I really like it. I have used it for almost everything David says he has used his for too. However, I just wish I would have removed my deck before doing some of the other stuff besides mowing. I think this is what caused the problems with my deck. I pick mine up from the shop this afternoon. I have to pay $187 for having the deck almost toatly rebuilt. May not sound like much, but it is the third time in 14 months that I have had to do this. And, each time it was because of my abusing the mower, not from a defect.
