Washer and dryer

I really know very little to nothing about them and we are sick of using the coin machines in our apartment complex. Any suggestions? Looking for something very affordable and simple.

    Watch the flyers, there are usually sales on appliances at Sears, Home Depot etc.

    On ebay you can buy 20% off coupons for Home Depot or Lowes. You can buy these and save lots of money.

    Kenmore is good. Front loaders are more expensive.

    Just get the base model if you want cheap and easy. Most of the settings on the more expensive models aren't used often if ever.

    My washer stays on one setting as does my dryer.

    In an apartment, you will be limited to the connections and space available. If you have room and connections for full-size units, then get them.

    Last apartment I lived in had connections for an all-in-one unit in a closet. I found a TINY unit, used and it worked for a while. Then, it quit, and the wife found a Sears unit and bought it. It was A LOT larger than the other one, and heavier, but it was still not as big as separate units. The closet was at the top of a staircase that had a landing with a 90 degree turn. It took many volunteers to get that thing in place. When we moved, I told her to just leave it, or sell it to the next tenants. She would not, and paid a moving crew to move the damn thing to the new house. Soon as she moved out, I got rid of it and bought a pair at Sears. The all-in-one was on its last legs at that point, anyway.

    As far as brands go, I recommend Whirlpool, and Kenmore made by Whirlpool.

    Front loaders are OK if you have a lot of laundry to do, but are way expensive.

    Our Maytag dryer 'passed away' on its 21st burthday. Washer was replaced a year or so earlier. Now have front-loading Frigidaire's. Wife is very pleased with them. Built like tanks, very quiet running and do a fine job.

    In college I had a magic clothes hamper.[:D]

    Pile dirty clothes on top and pull the clean ones from the botom of the hamper.[xx(]

    Kenmore appliances are great! We have had our washer for 10 years and the drier for 22 years. About 7 years ago I replaced the belt and bearings on the drier drum.

    DON'T BUY A KENMORE.

    Take my word for it, I work on them for a living.

    Either a whirlpool or the NEW style maytags( any ones produced after jan 1, 2007) are great machines and will serve you well.

    As far as going with a front loader or a standard machine, That realy all depends on how much you are going to use them and how long you plan to keep them.

    Front loaders use a lot less energy, Use a lot less water, Can fit a lot more clothes in them, And they will last a lot longer under normal curcumstances. But, They are going to cost you a lot more $$$ to get.

    A standard machine will hold plenty for a average size family, last a perty decent amount of time( normaly around 15 years), Will generaly do a lot better job of cleaning on heavy soiled items ( cow poop, car oil, grease, ect.), And they aren't goint to cost you that much to get them.

    I suggest going to your local, family owned, home town dealer and seeing what he has to offer. You may spend a little bit more there then you would at one of the box stores, But it is well worth it in the long run.

    ....can you say Lowe's? If you get the right deal at Lowe's, you can get free interest for 6 months and save an additional 10 percent if you open up an account. We just did that for a new refrig and saved $80 on the price plus the rebate on the handling fee.

    I purchased a new whirlpool washer and dryer last month, so far so good.

    my only complaint is that I wish my dryer had a shut off for the buzzer when it reaches the end of the cycle.

    My wife likes Kenmores, we've had three since 1966.I've replaced one dryer element once, and a sears guy charged us sixty bucks for a water pump once.

    see if you have a Sears Scratch 'n Dent store near you. You can usually get their same quality items that have only minor cosmetic defects/scratches on them for $100's less than one off the showroom floor. You figure most the time the things are in a closet anyhow.

    As stevenrayspeck said, I think Kenmore quality is the bottom of the barrel... all of my experiences in the past have taught me that and I won't ever buy another one again.

    I recently got the Whirlpool Duet front loaders and they are fantastic. Quick, minimal water use, HUGE capacity. But, not cheap.
