Angry Tahitian Crabs!
I came across this picture of an evening encounter with a pissed off crab in Tahiti that did not want us to pass on the sidewalk at night.

We were right across from Tahaa on the island of Huahine, spent a week there and then a week at Bora Bora in March 05. I reflect on the trip a lot, it was one of the highlights of my travel experiences.
We stayed at a French R&R station called the Hotel Petit, after it's proprietor, a man named Petit. That's it, just Petit. It was between the villages of Tapuamu and Tiva. It was an assortment of 2-man grass shacks with a common shower/bathroom hut. It was right on the water. It was heaven. I've never seen such beautiful stars. In 1980, Tapuamu and Tiva shut off their lights at about 9:00.
Oddly, I don't remember Huahine. I remember Riaatea, Moorea and the big Island of Tahiti. Then, I remember drinking a bunch of Vahine beers. Then, I don't remember much. Seriously, it was a life-changing experience. We were there to study Cultural Anthropology. My girlfriend was on the trip, so I wasn't as dedicated to the cause as I should've been. But I did pick up a lot of the language, which, along with the ancient Marae relgion, was to be the focus of my studies.
What saddens me the most is nobody there could give me more than the basic, tour guide information about the Marae. Even at Taputapuatea, all we got was the basics. When I asked about religion, all I got was, "We're Baptist now".
I've always wanted to go back, but I'm afraid Thomas Wolfe would probably be proved right.0 -
