Speaking of chiggers....
Why to they like some poeple and not others?
My Dad and I were out a few years ago and the grass was wet, he had so many chigger bites he almost lost his left leg. I did not have a single bite.
Any ideas?

Now that I think about it I dont get bit by mosquitoes or ticks....

Many different factors could play a part.
I am very hairy, my dad is not. He didn't get any chiggers after we were out there. Only me. I'm sure that plays a part in it.
Also how soon afterwards you shower plays a role. When reading about them, they said to shower immediately after romping through areas that are infested with chiggers, and it will greatly lessen their effect.
Thanks to those with the Campho-Phenique remedy. They are almost gone 24hrs later!0 -
I was once told that men attract chiggers, and women attract mosquitos and fleas.
It runs that way in my family. I don't get mosquito bites or fleas, even when we are all doing the same activities together, and they get pretty infested. Makes the ladies crazy, 'cause there are no chiggers around here that I know of.

If I walk in grass that is over 4 inches high, I get chiggers!

There is a relaxation tape I used to listen to. Kind of a guided imagry exersize. It tells you to immagine walking through a green meadow, feel the light breeze against your face, hear the birds sing, and then FEEL THE TALL GRASS BRUSHING AGAINST YOUR LEGS. The first thing that pops into my head is "Oh crap! Chiggers!" End of relaxation.0 -
DAVE, I know you probably take alot of meds for your condition,i take 71 pills a day,bugs dont bother me either,i guess i am a toxic nightmare for them, even no seeums dont mess around with me! it might be the only benefit people who take alot of meds have,besides being alive of course,aint complaining though [:D]LOKO 0 -

got them mild once, even when with others that where willing to cut their legs off they had them so bad they usually do not bother me, now mosquito's that's different 0 -
I've never came into contact with a chigger that I know of. I guess they don't have them in the Northwest. Do they have them in Texas? 0 -
They will be concentrated in one small patch of grass, or a hundred on one leaf of a bush for instance. The poor sucker who come in contact is miserable while the same partner walking beside him will have none.
That's why it often seems one person gets "ate up" while everyone else is okay.0 -
Yes! Especially the hill country and east Texas. I used to walk down the old telephone open wire and RR signal leads doing the pole climbing necessary for wrecking out. The Johnson grass can get 6 feet high in the ditches and all of it I ever got into was full of chiggers. I've had several hundred of them at once, more than once.
If working in that environment, you need to dust with sulphur powder from the neck down after having rubbed repellent on your skin. I never knew camphor to be anything but temporary relief, because the whole chigger gets below the skin and sucks blood. The enzyme they excrete is what causes the intense itching. Scratching inflames the area, providing more capillarial blood for the chiggers, who then feed more, excreting more itchy fluid, etc. Covering the bite with Chigger-Rid medicine which actually cuts off the respiration of the chigger, is the only way to get rid of them and the itch before their natural expiration occurs. Otherwise, you'll be scratching them for about 5 to 7 days. Too many chigger bites, and you need to see the doctor.0 -

Texas is full of them. They are commonly known there as either chiggers or redbugs due to many of them being a bright reddish, or reddish orange color. There is an old rhyme about them that was often sang by small kids to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner:
Oh say can you see...any redbugs on me? If you can, pick a few...and we'll have red bug stew. Like I said, Texas is full of them. [8D]0 -

I will be 41 in July. I never had a tick or anything like that so either I am really really lucky or they just dont like me. [:D] Now the skeeters will land on me but wont bite then they just fly away.0 -

You might be right. Maybe I have them mixed up with another little critter.0 -
We had chiggers on base in the sandbox. I used to walk around in sandals all the time when I was off-duty, and I never once got bit. 0
