ENDWELL, N.Y. (AP) -- Who needs friends like these?
Police near Binghamton, New York, say three people helped a man in a wheelchair move -- then helped themselves to his checkbook.
Authorities say the "helpers" then tried to pass four forged checks.
An investigator says only one of the checks actually was cashed by a credit union. The money was used to purchase gasoline and marijuana.
Two men and a woman have been charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Police say they searched the home of one of the men, who had been friends with the victim, and the stolen checkbook was recovered

The guy in the wheelchair promised to pay them gas money to help him move. When he didn't, they took his checkbook. Since they didn't have enough gas to get back home and, with the price of gas so outrageous, they cashed a couple of checks. After they put gas in their van, they were really upset because the old guy had ripped them off. They bought the pot to help them cope with their disappointment in being used by someone they thought was a friend. 0 -
