What type of shot for home defense shotgun?
I just purchased a Remington 870 express magnum for home defense and recreational shooting. When I went to pick it up I was asking the salesman what type of shot to use for home defense and he stated either a 2-3/4 #4 or #6 which I believe is bird shot. Is this the best load for home defense? He said that 00 buckshot will tear up the walls if fired inside but I am thinking that is the least of my worries when facing an intruder. Also can I fire slugs out of the regular barrel on the gun or does it have to be a rifled barrel?

I got 5 rounds of #6 shot waitin in a 870 express with a smoothbore slug barrel. If by chance i dont grab that then theres a Stoeger coach gun loaded with 00##. Depends i guess where the perp is in the house, but i;ll probably grap the 870. 0 -
Back in the early 1960s my cousin was a police officer in Corinth, Mississippi. He told me about an argument at the local Dixie Dog Drive-In Restaurant. Two gentlemen got into a disagreement about something or other and one went to his car and pulled out a butcher knife and started back to the other man. The other man saw the knife, so he went to his car and pulled out a twelve gauge shotgun. He said later that he only wanted to "wound" the guy with the knife, so he shot him in the arm. He cut his arm off at the elbow. The wounded man sat down on the curb and bled to death. He was dead when my cousin got there. He used number six high brass. 0 -

3" mag 1 7/8 oz. #4's for the first 3 then 4 more 3" No 1 buck. 24 pellets of .30 cal.
However I forgot to mention the above is my backup. Yelling and screaming from Dog Bite would be first.[:0]0 -
Light shot for in-house use. Less collateral damage if you miss and guaranteed results if you hit.
One added bonus... Not that it would ever happen because this would be against the law, but if one accidentally discharged a load of light shot toward an intruders backside as he exited across the lawn...
My guess is that his next all-consuming hobby would be picking shot out of a very hard to reach area. Usually the location of these trifling little aggravations isn't something one wishes to explain at the emergency room. It then requires the services of a really good friend who's willing to pick shot from one's posterior.
7 1/2's at 30 yards will furnish a really nice butt shot pattern, but it would be SO wrong to ever do it.[;)]0 -
The longest shot in my house would be about 23' (I measured). Even a cylinder bore only opens up about 7" at that range...I've got high-brass #5's in the Benelli, so I can say, if need be:
"I didn't choose any super-deadly tactical ammunition...It's the same ammuntion I use for pheasant hunting..."0 -
Two things to consider.
1. Distance is limited inside a house. I will not use the term "bird shot" as it could mean anything. A low base 1 oz. load of #8 shot will do what you want inside the house and up to twenty yards outside. Recoil is a consideration. Especially on a short barrel or short stocked shotgun.
2. Outside the house 00 buckshot has 9 pellets and is good to 40 yards with great knockdown power. A shotgun slug requires a cylinder choke (check what your gun is marked), and it will penetrate a motor, and I would not recommend it's use inside the house.
Under combat conditions use the KISS method. Keep It Simple Stupid. Most intruder shootings are 3 shots or less, and you don't want to shoot the intruder outside the house as they are running away.

1oz #9 (12ga "lite" skeet load) from a "skeet" choked barrel will basicly make a 3/4" hole at 18 feet, and the wad will be on the other side of the hole. Looking at the damage, most people (LEO's included) would think that the hole had been made with a slug. Besides there is almost no recoil with that loading.
Even IF your "burgler" was wearing body armor (with the above load), he'd be laying on the floor gasping for air like a fish out of water. Something to consider, before you go all "macho" with the magnum (mangle-em) loads.0 -
