This is rough
I start the grave yard shift tomorrow night, have to stay up until 6. I don't know if I'm going to be able to do it.

I don't think you can ever completely get used to it but I got as close as possible and loved it. It takes awhile but once you get your "clock" reconfigured you will have a lot more time to go shooting, fishing, ect. My trick (Ilearned it from my father-in-law who worked graves for 30 years) was to force yourself to stay awake in the morning and sleep for the eight hours right before your shift starts. You will want to sleep as soon as you get home but if you do that your a$$ will be dragging all the time. Are you going to be on it for awhile or just temorary? 0 -
Most likely I'll be on it for a while. I've been on day shift since I got to Minot back in July, I imagine I'll be on the grave yard for some time. 0 -

What time do you have to be in? If it's 2200 try and stay up until 1400 if you need 8 hours of sleep. That way, you wake up and go to work. If you sleep your 8 hours when you first get home then you will be up from around 1500 until you show up from work which makes for a long night. Does this make sense? I'm pretty drunk after spending all evening at the ER. 0 -
I have to be in at midnight 0 -
Then I'd go to sleep at 1500, get up at 2300 and that will give an hour to get to work. When you get home in the morning go shooting, fishing, chase tail, whatever, but stay awake. The mistake that everybody on graves does is go to bed as soon as you get home.Don't. Do you go to bed as soon as you get home from day shift? Same thing. 0 -
That's the reason I loved mids on active duty. It gives you all day to run errands around town and take care of stuff at businesses that are normally closed by the time you get off day shift.
We would normally go golfing 2-3 mornings a week sometimes doing 36 holes, go to the range another morning. Go to sleep around 1500-1600hrs or later, no problem. Sundays are the worst but atleast they moved you after football season! Fridays are great because you can party it up in the morning, pass out and be wide awake ready for round 2 when the day shifters are ready to party at nite.
ljwrench is right, if you go to sleep as soon as you get home it will make it a very long day/night.0 -

Been on the shift for ten+ years....
Had to paint the bedroom window black to keep out the light and run a fan to cover the noise.
Still don't get enough slleep sometimes. Last nite (Saturday)14hrs of sleep deficit semi curing sleep.
Plus side At least where I work...The people on 3rd are much less like to stir up needless crap, and all end up being pretty good friends
Tip cut back on the caffine the last half of the nite....And you'll want to eat at work and at home so unless you don't mind gaining fifty lbs...watch that closely too.....0 -
I worked graveyard for probably 8 years. It's not that bad as long as you do as what these others say. You just have to live an opposite life.
My problem was, my wife use to expect me to get up in the afternoon to fix supper for the night. I did it for awhile, until I asked her how would she like it if I woke her up at 4 in the morning to fix supper for me when I get off work. That ended that.0 -

Personally I never cared for the graveyard shift.[V] 0 -
Don't fight it. Use sleeping pills one week and alcohol as a sleeping aid the next week. Darken the bedroom as much as possible. get atleast 6 hours. 0 -

His whole apartment is already a cave. It can't get much darker.0 -
Back when I was trying to get used to working mids (a long time ago) I took a piece of cardboard and cut it to where I could wedge it perfectly in the bedroom window frame. I covered this with aluminum foil and kept it stashed under the bed for when needed, but I was still able to open things up on my off days. Some of my co-workers also put split pipe insulation around the edges for a total seal.
Instant cave, just like flipping a switch.0 -
Now Zulu...how do you know about his apartment? Hmmmmmm? 0 -

Sounds like you were cleaning the dust out of it and broke something...0 -
Oh I broke it alright...I was down for several days while waiting for him to have time to get it right again. He really saves my rear from time to time. 0 -

I prefer gnome. I have a kind and gentle side, I'm not completely evil.0 -
If you have a kind and gentle side, then I'm Bill Gates. 0
