Nasty, and if it comes around me, it's suicidal.

...That's a black and brown recluse widow trapdoor wolf spider. That, or a zombie. Either way, stay out of its way.

If it's in my house it's a dead one.

I looked in a spider website. The closest kind I can find to this one is a Philodromid crab spider. It is definitly not a brown recluse.[:)]

definitely not a brown recluse, and as always if anyone wants to see a real brown recluse, I'll mail you a dead one.

I was just about to tell Zip I thought he was right because as soon as I saw it, it reminded me of a crab.

A while back, maybe a couple of years, one that looked about like this one except he was black took up residence at the bottom of a cactus plant the wife keeps on the window seal over the kitchen sink. I named him Herman. Whenever I wanted some excitement I'd go to the kitchen and watch him.

One day Herman was hanging out on the window glass. A fly landed about a foot from him on the same glass. Old Herman covered about half the distance in no time flat and stopped on a dime. Then he just slowly moved up on the fly within about an inch. The fly just stayed there. Then with one quick move Herman was on the fly. The fly never moved and Herman just held him for a couple of minutes. When Herman moved, the fly just fell to the window seal.

One day Herman had the misfortune of coming out of his safe house while the wife was washing dishes. I heard a scream and just had a feeling it didn't bode well for Herman. I went to the kitchen and asked what happened. She said "I had to kill a spider." I said "why did you murder Herman?" She gave me "that look" and said "you should have told me he was a pet!"

I think this one has taken up residence in the back of my filing cabinet. His chances of survival are probably better than Herman's.
