There shouldn't be any sales tax on food!
But taxing porn isn't the way to fix it!
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A state senator has withdrawn for now a bill to cut the sales tax on food by imposing a hefty levy on pornography.
Sen. Dewayne Bunch of Cleveland said he wants to become more familiar with the measure before working it through Senate committees.
Under the original plan, there would be a 25 percent tax on adult video stores, escort services, adult movie rental and pay-per-view subscriptions and on magazines, books and other adult materials.
The measure would also charge "adult cabaret" performers an annual $400 occupational privilege tax.
Bunch stressed that the Senate version is only temporarily on hold.
State Rep. Stacey Campfield of Knoxville is sponsoring the bill in the House.

Georgia does not tax food items at the grocery store. Don 0 -
Taxing is government's answer to income inequity and/or behavior modification. As such one needs to ask what is the purpose of a tax. Income tax when combined with the welfare system (which includes business subsidies) is government saying one person has too much money and someone(thing) else has too little, so the government is going to be Robin Hood and make things right; or, YOU PEOPLE are spending your money wrong- you're buying too much pornography, or expensive cars, or gasoline or anything made in a furren country, likker and t'backee, so in keeping with the supply/demand curve, we, your benevolent government, are going to protect you from yourselves by raising the price.
Actual government projects such as funding the military or building highways have very little to do with the taxing system.
Beyond that, it's too early in the day to get me going on that subject.[:(]0 -
FOOD SHOULD NOT BE TAXED..... 0 -
One reason I try not to go out to eat often. Here there's 9-1/2% tax on restaurant food plus when you include 15-20% tip that's a total of 25-30% of the bill that you get nothing for.
BTW grocery store food is taxed 1.25%. Better to go buy a nice steak and BBQ it.[:p]0 -
Personal assets should not be taxed.

No food tax in Satan California, either.[}:)] 0 -
Recently, in Maine, the owner of several Subway sandwich shops throughout the state was hit with a bill for back salwws taxes and a penalty because he had been giving all of his employees a daily free lunch. Pre-packaged food and restaurant food is taxed in ME, while groceries are not. But, it is just a matter of time. 0 -
Ever notice lawyers have the least amount of tax for any professional?
Just a cheap business licence.[;)]
Ever wonder why so few states have enacted laws against talking on a cell phone while driving?
It's mostly lawyers elected.
Now if the hookers have to pay a tax on every trick they turn, shouldn't lawyers?0 -
Florida has no sales tax on food items either.. 0 -

Kalifornia does tax food in restaurants but not in the stores. They used to not tax food ordered outside the restaurants but that was way back when the sales tax was 4% & they had the girls come out with trays that attached to your car window. Hard to think how terrible we thought the 4% tax was. 0 -
No tax on groceries in KY....[:D] 0 -
I think it was about 15 years ago that California adopted a "junk food" sales tax on items that some group of nuts in Sacramento deemed were snack foods, depending mostly on the size of the package. For instance; a full sized bag of chips was not taxed since this was considered a food item but the small Grab and run bags were considered to be snacks and taxed. Purchase a package of 6 full sized donuts= No tax. Purhcase a 6 pack of the small Hostess donuts and you were you are taxed (I love their crumb donuts [:p]). A quart of milk or larger was not taxed but a pint carton (which goes great with you newly taxed mini donuts) was taxed. If you bought a package of frozen burritos you paid no tax but put them into the microwave inside the store and cooked them for lunch like magic...TAXED. I am not sure that anyone actually understood exactly what was supposed to be taxed and what was not but thankfully this tax disappeared after a few years (one of the few taxes to ever fade away). 0 -

Ray B, you're one of the very few who actually understand the tax system.

I recently found out we have an extra "eating out" tax. Usually if I get something at McDonald's I just eat it in the truck or take it home. A couple of weeks ago I ate a muffin or something inside at McDonald's and noticed there was a separate, additional "eat in" tax. I don't know if it's state or local. I guess I've been paying it for years, just never noticed it.0 -

COMMENTS: Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What the hell happened?
Can you spell "politicians!"0 -

I must disagree with this as the crack dealers illegal INVADERS, pimps and ho's and all the others that are not reporting income should pay their taxes here as they will buy food there is no evidence of anyone going hungry because of a sales tax on food we should abolish the IRS and go to a national retail sales tax www.fairtax.org0 -

This is the absolute fair tax. If your rich and buy steaks you'll pay alot more than the poor folks who only can afford hotdogs. With this kind of tax all forms of income tax could be eliminated.
I remember many moons ago when Iowa did away with sales tax on food. However like some one else said if you go into a convenient store a buy a sandwich to put into the microwave then it's taxed.
Our newly elected liberal govenor whined, and got his way. A $1 increase on cigarrette tax, which is now $1.36. POS!0 -
The porn tax will never pass. Our politicians won't want to dish out the extra cash from their own pockets.[:D] 0 -

Tennessee has a fairly hefty sales tax, but it's levelled out by the fact that there's no state income tax. Also, since there's no state tax to deduct on the federal income tax, our sales tax is deductible (if we itemize).
Some of us might not like losing the tax on food for that reason.[:D]0 -
No tax on food or medicine in NM.
Let me tell you how it will be;
There's one for you, nineteen for me.
'Cause I'm the taxman,
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
Should five per cent appear too small,
Be thankful I don't take it all.
'Cause I'm the taxman,
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
(if you drive a car, car;) - I'll tax the street;
(if you try to sit, sit;) - I'll tax your seat;
(if you get too cold, cold;) - I'll tax the heat;
(if you take a walk, walk;) - I'll tax your feet.
Taxman!
'Cause I'm the taxman,
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
Don't ask me what I want it for, (ah-ah, mister Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more. (ah-ah, mister heath)
'Cause I'm the taxman,
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
Now my advice for those who die, (taxman)
Declare the pennies on your eyes. (taxman)
'Cause I'm the taxman,
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
And you're working for no one but me.
Taxman!0 -
