M44 question
Can anyone tell me anything about this? It's a M44, I think it's Russian and made in 1944. I like to know anything about it's history. I know it's not much, but what's it worth? I just think it's neat. Could it have been in a war?

It is indeed Russian, it may have been used in a war (but probably wasn't--it looks like it's in too good of condition)...I have one myself, they're fun rifles. I THINK (and I could be wrong) that the triangle-arrow mark is the Izvhesk arsenal...For more info, check out www.Surplusrifle.com
As for worth? I think SGN had 'em for under $100 the last time I looked.0 -
It's definitely a carbine and an M44 Nagant. You can see the bayonet. That shows it's an M44.
They're an awesome sight at night. Huge muzzleblast and a bruiser off a bench. Ammo is cheap and plentiful, although most is corrosive.
They're alot of fun.0 -
The markings are identical to mine. My wife bought me mine about 6 years ago for $45. I'd say that it didn't see any war action. 0 -

It also looks like it is in very good shape.
I used to have a couple Polish M44s that were dated 1953 and were perfect shape.

Also, it doesn't hurt at all free hand. Off a rest it will turn your shoulder all kinds of pretty colors.0 -

Izhevsk - Soviet after 1928
From the markings on yours, I would say that it was from the Izhevsk Arsenal

Check the bolt for markings and if you find a "T" then it is a Tula arsenal bolt and not the original.
If you find this marking:
Then the bolt matches the reciever from the Izhevsk Arsenal.

It certainly could have been used in a war. It may have been used in WW2.
Lots of the Chinese commies that fought our Marines in Korea were armed with these rifles.0 -
The rifle was probably refinished at some time. Most were and that's why they look so nice. Depending on when it was made in 1944 it may have seen some action. Unfortunately we will never know exactly how many Nazis it killed if any.
The recoil is not that bad. The ballistics of the 7.62x54r are very close to the 30-06 or.308. The ammo is cheap and plentiful and the rifle will a lot of fun. Don't forget to clean the barrel with something with ammonia in (like dish soap) after shooting surplus ammo (surplus ammo will almost certainly be corrosive).
Don't be surprised if you can't get the bore to shine even after a lot of cleaning. It will almost certainly have a dark bore due to the corrosive ammo the Russians used.
Another poster left a link to surplusrifle.com. Go there and it will tell you just about all you ever want to know about the Nagant rifle.

Shoot it at dusk or in some low light and film the muzzle blast. Any shoulder pain you feel from the recoil will be offset by watching the video of the gout of flame coming out of the muzzle. [:D] 0 -
Recoil is not to bad if fired from the shoulder.
Off the bench can be a killer though![:0][B)]0 -
