Propane question, delivery, tanks????

I have two large propane tanks, I believe they are called Pigs, not sure though.

My question is who owns these? The local company I have done business with brought them when I set up the house and I did not have to pay for them.

I am thinking about changing where I get my propane and fuel oil to wherever is the cheapest at the time and not having one particular dealer. This is fine with fuel oil because I own the tank.

Can I have another dealer deliver propane or will they refuse because it is not there tanks? If I want to switch dealers would the new dealer need to bring new tanks?

    My propane tank is owned by the fuel company. I would think that might be a problem.

    if you have had a tank for x number of years from a supplier (co-op??)sometimes at that time you became owner...i have purchased my own tanks & generally a new supplier will fill a privately owned tank after pressure & leak testing it...i took my own to lake house after supplier wanted way to much annual rental for a low gallonage use but gave them first chance to fill...they came & checked it no charge, filled it, & i sent them a check....all 5 suppliers in area were almost same price so the rental fee was the savings.

    if you didn't buy it they own it, ask about buying it at then shop around.

    In North Carolina, and Georgia, that company that you have been dealing with would own the tank, and NOBODY else will fill it. It must be a law because the other companies won't touch it with a ten foot pole.

    I just went thru this. Like you, the tank belongs to the company. I found some other companies selling propane cheaper so I called the company that owns the tank and asked to buy the tank. They asked me if I wanted to do this so as to buy where it was cheapest. I said yes. They agreed to sell me future propane based on the local prices. They offered me a contract then that I will buy 1000 gallons over the winter and the price would be $1.69 per gallon. So I agreed and the local price here is now $2.58 a gallon but I pay $1.69.

    Addendum: Forgot to mention the companies here have no restriction where they sell to. They will fill anybody's tank if you have the money to pay.
