I just bought a good used X-Box for the kids with 3 games and 2 controlers for $50.

I play mine on our 10 foot theater screen and front projector with 7 channel surround sound and High Definition. The XBox and most games are HD if you get the HD connector.
XBox is great for the kids, but if you want some family time, get the Wii, it is loads of fun and the whole family will love it. Totally different concept to other video games.
