They sell an adaptor that plugs right into your truck's wiring harness. You just unplug the harness connect near the rear of the vehicle and plug the adaptor in between the two ends. They are water proof and do not damage the OEM harness. The trailer dealer or most good part stores should have them for both the 4 or 7 pin plug. If you can not find one locally check your local junk yards and take the complete plug & harness from one that has the towing package on it.

Whenever I need to wire a tow vehicle, I tow the trailer to the RV shop and have him do it. He charges me $25, and I don't have to make myself crazy with frustration.

WalMart carries that same plug and harness. I know they are a bad word for some folks, but the product works.[:)]

Let me know if you want a 7 outlet plug for the back of your truck. Like if you are going to install a brake controller. I have a 7-way plug with a mounting bracket that I never used and sold the trailer that it went with.

    It is something like this:

Last time I was under a Fode, the wires were tagged, or you can go to your local Ford parts dealer and get the correct harness. There are harnesses for both the trailer plug and brake controller.

If you buy a good quality, complete plug set up, it will come with a wiring diagram.
