Marc1301, something I've always wondered

    Kind of a "trade off"!
In these parts they are in the ceiling, unless it is an older mobile home.
Obviously pretty much everyone knows that cold air sinks, and hot air rises,........so just based on that premise, it makes much more sense to have the cooling vents in the ceiling, for the cooling effect to the person, and the air mixing.
Efficiency wise, it depends where you live![:D]
Here, I have been in attics in August, with a dark roof, in full sun, that have registered around 150 degrees. Even with "code" R factor ductwork, the heatgain in that atmosphere is a constant for at least 4 months here, as opposed to having a "crawlspace" foundation, with floor ducts.
While it is still hot in a crawlspace, it is nowhere near the same for those 4 months.
But then again here, we lose efficiency in the heating season, with the ceiling supply grilles, but the need for serious heat is brief.
In a mixed climate,......severe cold for periods, and also a few months of serious heat, the best solution is heating supplies in the floor, and cooling supplies in the ceiling, with the obvious zoning dampers necessary.
    High dollar though![:D][;)]

Edit: In theory, leaving out climate differences, and just going by a climate like Florida, where most of the need is cooling,.......you are correct. Also the return is best placed in a high point of the ceiling, just not close to a supply grille.
