What kind of wood were they sawing for the mast? That is one hale of a lot of completely clear timber for that ragboat!! I've been working in shipyards all of my life practically and have never seen anything like it.

This brings back some memories--not of sawmills, but of the C. A. Thayer.
About 1954- 55, when I was about 14 or 15 years old, I worked for Chuck MacNeal, who had bought the Thayer from her owner, I believe a Captain Shields. He dredged a channel on the beach at McDonalds Cove, on Hood Canal and pulled the ship in to shore. This was on US 101. The ship was dubbed "The Pirate Ship Black Shield". We sold Hamburgers, souveniers, and tickets for the tourists to tour the pirate ship, as well as ice cream and popcorn to feed the bear. I worked there for 2 summers, as did my brother and sister.
About 1957, the ship was sold, as I was told, to the City of San Francisco. It was taken to Seattle, refurbished, fitted with new masts and sails and was to be sailed to San Francisco. It was caught in a storm, and had the masts blown off, and wound up being towed in.
It's at Fisherman's Wharf, I think as part of the National Park Service. We toured it in later years, but it had been restored to it's original configuration, which was unlike the ship I'd known.
I don't know much about ships, and I'm sure someone will correct me, but these are the stats I remember:
The Thayer was built in 1895 along the north coast of California, was 165 feet long. She was a 3-masted schooner, known as a "bald headed" schooner. The only power on board was a single cylinder engine of 12 hp, used to raise the anchor. She served as a lumber schooner, and was used by the Army during WW II, and ended up as a cod fisher before my boss acquired her.
