Stay-at-Home Dad's Salary $128,755 - Nearly $10,000 Less Than Stay-at-Home Mom's
Salary.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: SLRY), a leading provider of on-demand compensation management solutions, announced today the results of its 2007 Dad Salary Survey. Based on a survey of more than 6,500 fathers, Salary.com determined the time dads spend performing 10 typical job functions would equate to an annual salary of $128,755 for a stay-at-home dad. This is a 2.7 percent increase over last year's figure of $125,340, but $9,340 less than the equivalent salary for stay-at-home moms. Working dad's 'at-home' work was valued at $72,082 in 2007, up from $71,160 last year; this is in addition to the salary they earn in the workplace.
"We calculated the multiple jobs that make up the role of dad to highlight their contribution in the home and to compare the amount and value of their work to mom," said Meredith Hanrahan, chief marketing officer at Salary.com. "The findings do indicate that while dad's worth is substantial, he is still playing catch-up to mom."
Stay-at-home dads still remain relatively elusive. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates there are 159,000 dads that made the choice to stay at home in 2006, compared to 143,000 in 2005. Meanwhile, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates there were 5.6 million stay-at-home moms in 2006.
To determine the salary equivalents for dads, Salary.com consulted both stay-at-home and working dads and used the survey results to rank the top 10 jobs that comprise a dad's job description. Next, all 10 titles were assigned a dollar value based on the number of hours the respondents spend on each job, and the annual salary figure was computed.
When asked to define their at-home work, stay-at-home dads report Day Care Center Teacher and Computer Operator in the top spots. This year, Computer Operator surpassed General Maintenance Worker as the number two most time-consuming job. The rest of the top 10 ranking (in order of hours spent per week) are as follows: Cook, Van Driver, Facilities Manager, Psychologist, CEO, Groundskeeper and Laundry Machine Operator.
Working dads most identify with the following job titles (in order of hours spent per week): Computer Operator, General Maintenance Worker, CEO, Facilities Manager, Day Care Center Teacher, Van Driver, Psychologist, Cook, Groundskeeper and Laundry Machine Operator.
Despite dad's long hours at home, the research indicates that mothers still typically assume a disproportionate share of the workload at home, even if they're working outside the home. The average stay-at-home dad reported working 80.2 hours per week in his role while stay-at-home moms reported an average of 91.8 hours per week. Similarly, working dads reported 38.7 hours of 'at-home' work and no overtime compared to 49.0 hours for working moms - nine of which were overtime. The nearly $10,000 difference between mom and dad 'at-home' salaries is due to the fact that mom's longer hours awards her more overtime pay.
Other interesting findings from the Salary.com Dad's Salary analysis include:
-- The typical working dad earned no overtime in his 38.7 hour dad's workweek, while working moms earned, on average, 25 percent of their "mom salary" in overtime.
-- Although their hours differed, both parents had eight jobs in common: Day Care Center Teacher, Laundry Machine Operator, Computer Operator, CEO, Facilities Manager, Psychologist, Van Driver and Cook.

Do the home chores and shut the F up about it, will ya. A little cooking, cleaning, shopping and yard work, does NOT equal a six figure income and I know this because I have been alive for quite awhile, owned several homes and raised a family, for a goodly time as a working single dad.
