One thing you're forgetting about is after the M1A runs out of ammo or in the unlikely occurence of a jam it would make an excellent baseball bat.

Drop em in the mud and they keep on chuggin.

M1A. If you are only planning on shooting out to 400, what do you need a scope for. The M1A open sights are fine.

Because I'm old and the eyes aren't getting any better. I had a tough time picking out deer as they stood up in a bottom at dusk last season. The illuminated chevron on the ACOG plus 3.5 power will make that a bit easier (I hope).

It sucks getting old, but it beats the alternative.

I just ordered this one. Sufficiently evil looking, fits the bill for a SHTF piece, 400 yds no problem. I might replace the grip...I'll decide after I shoot it.

As Doug said above a full length M1A out to 400 yards does not need a scope! If you learn to shoot either an M1 Garand or M14/M1A Clone properly you'll find that a scope isn't necessary even at to 600 yards. You can hit a pie plate at 600 yards is properly trained.

When I first heard this at the range I thought the gentlemen telling me this was FOS. It didn't take but a couple of hours of range time to find out just how wrong I was....

    Good luck with your quest...
