daughter wanting to join

My oldest girl 17 almost 18 is wanting to join the air force. Which i am all for. My only concern is should i go ahead and sign for her or make her wait until march when she turns 18. I just want to make sure she knows what she wants and is planning to do. BTW she is very mature and level headed but still young. What do you guys think

    I've heard that the Air Force has let it's standards down a bit. They now accept anyone who can break 100.

    Just went through that - my Daughter is just (10 months)at her first assignment.

    She is really happy there.

    Depends on the Girl, I guess.

    Would be happy to answer any questions from our experiences.

    It's a womans perogative to change her mind. It probably wouldn't hurt to wait in case she does.

    The Navy used to have what they called a "Minority Enlistment", commonly called a "Kiddie Cruise". If you joined before your eighteenth birthday, you were released from active duty the day before your twenty-first birthday. If the Air Force has a similar deal, it might be to her advantage to join now. Otherwise, I don't see that it makes a lot of difference. Either way, I'm proud of her. [:)]

    ladyhunter - They should have a delayed entry program that will allow her to do all of the fun stuff (MEPS) ahead of time. If anything comes up she can delay acually going to boot for up to one year.

    Make sure that you have the recruiter explain everything to you. Sometimes they suger-coat the things when they explain it to prospects but you should be able to see through it. Also, make sure that she gets the GI Bill (which she will have to pay into, but it is worth it) and the College Fund.

    Make her wit until she turns eighteen.
    My parents did. I joined the Army two days after my 18th birthday.
    I ask them later why they made me wait after they had known that I have wanted to join the Army ever since the fifth grade. Their reply..

    "Son if something would have happened to you. We would have it to live with the rest of our lives. You making the decision we would not have been guilt ridden with the, What if we never signed the papers, Why did we do it, etc.."

    I fully understand where they were coming from now that I have kids of my own.

    Ever consider ROTC for college? She'd have her degree and could go in as an officer. Much better pay and future.

    +1. USAF (if that's the service she wants) have ROTC programs in various colleges and universities. She might also want to consider the Academy or the Prep School. This is my son's first year in the USAF Academy and is having a blast.
