  If the eyes are open, it's dead, if the eyes are closed, it's alive, maybe knocked out, but alive.

  I think the fact that the guts are removed should have been a good indication.
  
  You can tell the guts are gone if you look at the area just behind the ribcage and in front of the hams. See how it looks "caved in"? If the guts were in, it wouldn't look that way, in fact, it would be bloated from the gases in the stomachs.
