ARIZONA AIDS CALIFORNIA FIRE FIGHT
PHOENIX Firefighters and equipment from across Arizona have been sent to California to assist in the attack on fires ravaging the southern part of that state.
Weve been in touch with Governor Schwarzeneggers office, and the plan is to do all that we can to assist the people in Southern California,? said Governor Janet Napolitano.
The first crews were deployed from Arizona yesterday. As of Tuesday morning, a total of 19 engines are either in, or are en route, to California; orders for 35 more are in process.
Although Arizona has not been asked to house evacuees, our state is ready to do so. The Red Cross in Yuma County is prepared to accept 900 people at the local armory; there is also secondary space available. An emergency operations center is up and running, to coordinate in the event assistance is requested. In addition, the Yuma County Fairgrounds is available to house up to 191 horses, as well as other caged animals; a few horses have already been moved from fire scenes to the fairgrounds.
It is gut-wrenching to see homes and businesses disappear in flames,? said Governor Napolitano. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this disaster. ?
