gar-uhnd is what I have always heard, but dictionary also has ga-rand as an alternative. I would think the historical connection is pretty authoritative.

In WW 2 basic training we occasionaly called it a Ga-rand. But it was properly known a a M-1 Rifle. (Rifle. Cal .30 M-1). What ever one calls it it was the best battle rifle of WW 2. Bar none.

    U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M-1.

    GUH-rand.

It remains the second best battle rifle of all time, in the world. Second only to the legendary M-14.

According to one of the speakers at the 2006 NRA convention's, "M1 Garand Symposium," the correct pronunciation is Gar (like the fish) And. This comes after he interviewed John Garand's widow and asked for correct pronunciation.

It's supposed to be a bit like what we did to "Mi nay" when we anglicized it to "Mi knee" ball.

The sources I've read say the rifle is a "guh RAND" , with the emphasis on the second syllable, but was designed by John "Gare (like in Gary) end, with the emphasis on the first syllable. His family said in an interview that it should rhyme with "errand".

    I wasn't there, it's just what I've read.[;)][:D]

Doug Wilson: Got to agree with you about the Guh-rand . But it still was the best. The M-14 was a "spin off" of the M-1 rifle in most ways
and not all original to say the least.

That's WHY the M-14 is superior. It used the M-1 as a starting platform and improved from there.

The only downside of the M-14 is that it used the wimpy little 7.62 Nato instead of the far better .30-06.
