    I believe Grant and his troops where also in New Mexico for a time, but I don't believe they fought anybody.

    Good read and music, thanks for the link. It has been so long that I had read about Sibley and his forces that it was like reading about it for the first time.

    The note about Swope scalping the Indian brought to mind that scalping was a common practice among frontiersmen dating back to the early times in America. One wealthy merchant, in Arkansas, as I recall, even advertised in the local paper that he would pay either $5.00 or $15.00 for the scalp of any Yankee soldier. I have a copy of this advertisement buried away somewhere. Interesting.
