How bad is your management?
4 months ago we enacted a "work from home" policy where each person got 1 day a week that they could work from home via VPN. This was well received and going very well. Our systems are set up that most of us can do 100% of our job remotely.
Statistically, employees are more productive when they work from home (on average). I was very proud of this as I spear-headed the effort in an attempt to increase moral, which is low here.
Our glorious leader, a work-a-holic who commonly puts in 60 hours a week in the office and more at home, decided that we had a lot of "projects" to do and that with people taking vacation at various times this summer, that he would end the practice at least until September. He thinks that we will be much more productive now that we will be "working" an extra day each week. As a little joke to lighten the situation, he said employees will still be able to work at home if the want - at nights or on weekends as much as they want. What a jerk!
I guarentee you we will now lose at least a day or two in productivity from each employee.
Does your management suck too?

All managers are jerks, to some degree or another. Some are just bigger jerks than others, but it is a necessary trait of the successful manager. Some are born jerks, others learn to be jerks in management classes, still others learn it on the job.
BTW, I have chosen to remain at the lowest echelon of my job. I know I just don't have it in me to be a manager.0 -

We've got family-friendly, employee-friendly management, who, at this moment is watching me type, so more on this later....
Seriously, we're a very small company. So management pays well, gives bonus days off and generally rewards productivity and good attitude. No complaints here.0 -
People who can not manage hate managers. 0 -
I hate myself for the heap I put on me and I am very disapointed in my attitude lately...I should try harder and unless I see some improvement I will have a talk with myself. [:D] 0 -
now class....did we forget the 2 basic stressors?
good stress and bad stress?0 -
I don't hate managers. I just recognize that being a jerk, at least in someone's opinion, is necessary for success as a manager.
Mid-level managers are the worst and in the worst positions. Their subordinates and superiors alike regard them as jerks.
Anyone ever work in fast food? Retail store?0 -

Yes, there are managers whose power goes to their heads and they are in fact jerks. However, you shouldn't just paint all managers with the same broad brush. Managers have the responsibility for meeting business goals on time and within or under budget and many employees, naive or otherwise, interpret business requirements as abuse by management, similar to Moderators and Administrators who are chastised by forum members for doing their appointed job and then in turn complain because they are misunderstood.
I was in the Navy for 8 years and 9 months followed by 30 years in the defense electronics industry. I was an engineer, manager, and ultimately in senior management. Performing tasks associated with leadership is not being a jerk, but can be construed as such. It's how you perform those tasks that make the difference and the preponderance of managers I've been associated with performed very well.0 -
No worse than some of the people they try to manage.... 0 -
I hit my manager in the eye the other day. My eye is still black... 0 -
I don't like taking orders from the Mrs. [}:)] 0 -
OK. I admit to taking an extreme view that some might disagree with. I could even be wrong. Imagine that! I have seen some of the things that managers in my organization have to do, and I don't want to do that, so I remain where I am.
Our latest management faux pax: (at least in my opinion)
In order to reduce overtime, we now work 12 hour shifts. I am now off every day of the week, depending on which week we are talking about. Here is how it works.
Off Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Work Monday and Tuesday. Off Wednesday and Thursday. Work Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Off Monday and Tuesday. Work Wednesday and Thurdsday. Off Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And so on.
Actually, it isn't too bad on the 6am-6pm shift, but I don't see how the people on nights handle it, unless they maintain their night schedule on their days off as well.
Now, if one does the math on this schedule, one will find that there are four hours of overtime in each two-week cycle. Well, we can't have that, so there is one 8-hour day per two-week cycle, per employee. You pick a day, and go home early that day. Trouble is, that leaves the shift short, so the remaining employees end up really hopping. I am totally alone in my decision, but on my "short day," I don't go home early. I stay the entire 12 hours and don't put in for overtime. I don't like it when the other people take off early and leave more work for the rest of us, so I won't do it. So far, no one had followed my example.
I guess I am just not a leader. Another good reason not to seek a management position.0 -

I like to consider myself a benevolent, but all-powerful monarch.
It is a little like my job. There is a framework of rules within which to work. I know what to do and what not to do. There is very little, if any, direct interference from management, but management is there if I need them.
So, maybe I am not a monarch, nor even a manager. I am the cop of the forums.0 -
Being a Manager sucks. You are the in between of the main boss and the workers. I am no referee. 12 hours work days suck also. Anyone knows after 8 hours production fall off. 0 -

I happen to be a manager, so I guess your statement makes me a jerk.[}:)] However, I am not a jerk and none of my employees see me as a jerk. I treat each of them with respect and in return I am respected by them. There are a lot of managers that are jerks but there are also a lot that are good guys and easy to work for. For me, I know where I would be if weren't for my employees, so I do my best to make sure they are happy with their jobs. Now that being said, if I were not a manager, I wouldn't be able to sit here all day and read the GB forums.[;)][:D][;)][:D]0 -
The way to get offered a manager job is to get elected as the Business Rep for the union. If you do your union rep job well, management will try neutralize your effort by offering you a non-union management position.
The type of Managers [not middle management] but upper echelon management who do the best are ones without conscience who will play the roll of Alger Hiss the traitor and fire all of their oldest and dearest friends.0 -
i was a manager at a Taco Hell, i found that sometimes to get anyone to do anything i had to be a jerk, all they wanted to know was, can i take my break now. 0 -

WOW!
It is plainly obvious that you have permitted the union propaganda to go right to your head and poison it. It is also plainly obvious that you have no clue as to how a manager 1) gets promoted and 2) is supposed to do his job. Allow me to enlighten you.
The business rep will get offered a job for one of two reasons:he is very effective at negotiation and interpersonal relationships(a critical skill for managers) or he is such a PITA that they will promote him to fire him for incompetence.
The managers with "friends" on the job are in a pickle. If you allow your "friends" to take advantage of the fact that you are their manager, instead of helping be a part of your mutual success, then what kind of friends do you have?
If your "friends" are incompetent and need to be fired, then you do what it is that needs doing. Or you're incompetent and need to be fired.
Those who believe that a manager needs to be a jerk are absolutely correct. There are multitudes of crappy jobs that need to be done, regardless of the profession. The guy that has to hand them out is the jerk. He really may not be, but whoever gets the job thinks so.
slipgate-your manager is an idiot and needs to be corrected (*edited to continue)if the facts show that working from home is more efficient, why would he be permitted to go back to a known, less efficient way of doing things. It makes poor business sense.0 -
Our managers keep giving worker of the year/quarter to the guy that doesn't do his job.
At first we were mad. Now it's quite comical.
Heh Sergeant Worthless.....where's your boy at? Get stuck under the table again?
"Give him workmens comp and another worker of the quarter award"
....stupid air force.0 -

You should get him a copy of "The Office". 0 -
I started a response this morning but got interrupted (how dare they)...I couldn't have said it better...I too am a manager...not a jerk (just don't ask my wife)...Actually we (@ work) have a great work environment...Managing people takes work...but it's not that hard! Working relationships (of ANY sort) require an "exchange of reasonable expectations" and a "relationship sufficient to support the task at hand"....
If your not happy about your work....Do something about it or stop your whining...

Anyone ever work in fast food? Retail store?
I used to work for SuperAmerica as a cashier. My manager was a nice person, when she transferred to a new store I transfered also. When she was transferred to a new store they asked her who should be manager in her place, I got the job.
Speedway bought the company and things went down from there. When I made my goals and bonus I would buy gift cards for each of my employees (after all they did the sales of gas and food). The district manager came in every month and told me to get one employee to quit as he brought down my profits. This employee was a 64 year old man who walked 5 miles to work all year round in any weather and would come in if someone didn't show. But he was expensive as he had benefits and that affected my bottom line.
The district manager demoted me for failing to get rid of him and I wound up night cashier at another store (where I was fired for having benefits and bringing down the bottom line after 11 years with no write-ups).
When I was demoted 3 employees quit in protest (not the old guy, he kept working until he retired and then died, nobody showed up at his funeral from the store.)0
