Driver license etched on gun

Lately I've seen maybe a half dozen auction listings where there is a note about a previous owner etching their drivers license number on the receiver of a gun. Why would some one do this? Are there any states that require it?

  They do it because it's likely to be stolen - or at least the owner thought so.

  Just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after you. No really, people do that as an identification so if they are stolen and recoverd they would be easily identified. I engrave some of mine on the outside just to look cool, It's also a deterrant to selling them when money is tight, unless you know someone with your same initials.

  There was a big run on doing this back in the '70s with all my friends......engraving their license Nos on everything. I did it on a few things like tools, but NEVER to my guns. I had more sense then that. [:)][:)]
