Coach Nick Saban cites 9-11, Pearl Harbor to show challenges facing Tide, spokesman says

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama's latest loss has coach Nick Saban searching for ways to motivate his team.

Citing the 9-11 terrorist attacks and Pearl Harbor, Alabama coach Nick Saban said Monday his team must rebound like America did from a "catastrophic event."

In this case, that would be an embarrassing 21-14 loss Saturday to Louisiana-Monroe.

"Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event," Saban said during the opening remarks of his weekly news conference. "It may be 9-11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, or whatever, and that was a catastrophic event."

Alabama's just getting ready to face No. 25 Auburn, its biggest rival, on Saturday.

    Nick needs to realize that it's just a freaking game. Nobody gets killed, no one loses their home or livelihood. It's just a game.

    how wrong you are. its not just a game, its a JOB. people lose their jobs all the time. sports is big business. i know a few people who lost their jobs, home and livehood because they didnt perform at their job which was coaching or playing a professinal sport.
    sports is a game to fans and thats it. for everyone else its a business just like a factory, hospital or any other place of employment.

    I agree...Saban is an idiot. He is also a very disloyal person.
    I wish Alabama cans his behind.

    During his short stint w/the Fins, he implemented some Draconian rules. He would not allow player interviews aside from the mandated interviews required by the league. He rarely spoke to the media.
    He has no people skills at all...he is an egotistical ingrate.

    And yes, comparing a freakin football game to 9-11 or 12-7 is beyond idiocy.

    I remember his stint with the Tigers....

    Had a clause in his contract which stated that he would be the highest paid coach in college football.

    The new contract grows from the $1.6 million he earned in 2003, which had a stipulation that required him to make at least $1 more than the highest-paid college coach in the country if LSU won the national championship. LSU beat Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4 for the BCS title.
    In the current year, Saban will get a $400,000 base salary, $1.45 million for appearing in radio, TV and Internet programs and $450,000 in ''additional revenue'' from the Tiger Athletic Foundation, shoe and equipment contracts and other deals, according to the contract released Thursday. The base salary and radio and TV appearance money will grow over the life of the contract.
    He also can earn up to $350,000 more a year depending on LSU's postseason game appearances and up to $50,000 extra a year if the football team is among those college teams with the highest graduation rates.
    The seven-year contract is retroactive to Jan. 1.

    Word around Tigerland is that ole Nick was dipping his wick in some coeds and the matter was getting too hot to keep under wraps--hence the flight to Florida and the Dolphins. Of course, the obvious draw of bucks brought him to Bama but the coeds won't be able to keep him up all night if the L's keep crowding the W's on the scoreboard. [:p]

    No. It's a game. That's all. Some people are blessed enough to get paid for playing or coaching that game at a high level, but it is still a game. Can't coach it well enough, or play it well enough, you move on and find a job.

    But because of his high demands for a paycheck and what Michigan
    has to pay to buy out his contract from Alabama, they can't afford
    him.
