Project burn out
Ever get to the point on a project you don't even want to look at it anymore? I'm there with my motorcycle. The latest addition was suppose to be dual front brakes which include new forks but I have $400 poured into them and I'm no where near close to getting them on the bike, still have another 150 to 200 to go before they can go on. I'm just sick of it that I don't even care to ride it at this point.

Yeah. I think I've been there before, and I think it was last a few years ago with a road bike that I was building, and trying to train for a race at the same time.
I spent nearly a year building it, I trained for this race. I did it because I set myself up for a challenge -- I had never been road biking before (I'm a mountain biker at heart) and I'd never been in a race before, and I wanted to accomplish both in a year.
So, I built this very nice bike from the frame up, trained at the gym and used my mountain bike as a road bike until the road bike was ready.
By the time the race came, I was so sick of it that I wasn't even interested, but I did the race only because I had invested all that time, money and energy into it. I finished, I was proud of myself, and I sold the road bike about a month later.
I'll never do road biking again.0 -
Have patience...you can ship that bike in pieces or together...take your time and don't stress it. It's suppost to be a relaxing hobby...[:D]
Have patience...shop around. Go to swap meets...watch the local papers...scrounge around.
I got 2 Kawasaki Ninja's for free....a GI bought them on Ebay and couldn't get them to run. Took me one hour and I had the electricals figured out and had a running Kawasaki Ninja.
I put the engine into my QUAD. I sold the original Suzuki 250 2 stroke for more than I paid for my entire 4 wheeler.
You shoulda seen people's faces when I started that sucker up.
I parted the remainder of the Ninja's out on Ebay and came way ahead on that project.
You can find an entire front assembly to put on your frame with dual front brakes...cheap....but it would take money.
Find a bike that has the exact front setup you want...shop around for that bike cheap. Lets say you find that bike for $800 with high miles and the plastic/paint shot to heck...buy it...strip off what you want...sell the rest. You'll save money.0 -
ObiWan, that's what I did 4 years ago and that's how I got my '78 GS1000. She was leaning against a barn with a windjammer and could barely do 50 mph. Now she's a barn burner that'll do over 150 if you have balls enough. As for the new front end and brakes, all I need are dust seals(opposed to the oil seals) for the forks, front master cylinder rebuild kit and new brake lines. I'm holding out for braided stainless soe I don't have to change them ever again. I'm just tired of spending money on it right now.
I have the parts just stuck in the middle of rebuilding them before I run them. That's the way I roll, better to fix them before they break when their condition is unknown.0 -
Yup - I dumped $14k into a 1966 Pontiac LeMans and surprise, surprise, it will still a POS 1966 Pontiac LeMans. I sold it for $2500. 0 -
Take a break - when that happens, it indicates that it's become obsessive
and is running you. I take some time out - look for the balance.

Dust seals?
Go to your local auto parts store and get a pair of offroad shock boots. $20 max.
Scuff them with a brillo pad and wipe with alcohol. Spray paint flat black.
It's the "retro" look if anybody asks.
Your issue has nothing to do with performance of the machine. Only looks. Dust seals can be "waived" for operational flight of the craft according to AFM 300.515....lol.[:p]0 -

It's great to have a father-in-law that's retired and has too much energy. He drives my wife crazy when he's up here but we he gets a lot done.0 -
Never had that problem. I always went about things in such a mad rush, didn't have time to get tired of it before it was finished. Now THAT'll burn one out..permanently. 0 -
My last year of law school I bought a 71 BMW R60/5. Took it apart bit by bit, lovingly sanded all parts, and while I was studying for the bar, would take breaks by painting. Finally, I got it all together for final black paint in my parent's garage. Painted it all, but the fumes were overwhelming. I opened the garage door, and every single bit of shi- that was on the driveway, dust, leaves, bugs, etc., all flew into the garage and landed on my wet paint on EVERYTHING.
I was so PO'd that I just bolted it all together and sold it.0 -
Cat - You are aware, I'm sure, that the master cylinder from a single disk setup will not work properly on dual disks ??

THat is why I have to get a rebuild kit for the dual brake master cylinder that came with all of the parts.0 -
DUH!! The master cylender is the same. The split manafold on the frount end stablizer is the key. Do rebuild the master and the brake units if its been sitting for more then a year. Brake fluid attracts water that will seep down to the brake unit and freeze it up. 0 -
Not to get all pissy, but I know exactly what I'm doing on this build. I'm an FAA certified A&P and an AF Crew Chief. The purpose of this thread was to ask if others had a similar experience with working on a project to the point of getting sick of it. Dust seals are important because they extend the service life of the oil seals. The single and dual brake masters are different, that's why I have to rebuild the on that came with the dual brake set-up instead of just running the single brake master that's on my bike. 0 -
I thik "projects" are better than "a project" in that case. When you have a ton of things going on all of the time....it is a happy suprise when you get ANYTHING done at all. Its like a suprise to have something all of the sudden be complete.....because you are surrounded by other things that are nowhere near done and you had no idea it would be possible to ever get any of it done.
Like....moving....car work....yard work.....dog care....school enrolment...internet work....not to mention all of the strange things all over the place I keep meaning to do like a large picture frame with the mirror I plan on getting mounted in it propped over against the wall.0
