For those of you who have conversed with me, you might remember my mom had some serious health issues as a result of botched surgeries. This is my first chance to check in since I went to stay with her in the hospital right after Thanksgiving. She passed away on 13 December. I stayed at the hospital, University of MO, Columbia unitl the day she passed away, sleeping in the waiting room and showering in the basement locker area.
My praises to the hospital staff who were caring and very understanding, even through a major snow storm. Family members staying with patients were treated to free meals in the cafeteria during the snow storm and its aftermath. The surgeon who operated and had to break the news of my mom's cancer cried during the discussion of continuance of care or withdrawal of prolonged life support in the wake of metastatic cancer. My mom had a living will which made the decision easier for my brother and me. Her nurse from the night shift even called to see how she was doing.
My mom was an extrodinary woman who hunted deer, rabbit, squirrel, and turkey, farmed for a living, had the most wonderful sense of humor, never met a person she couldn't turn into a lifelong friend, and adopted every stray animal that ever crossed her path. My Dad passed away in '02 just before the hubbie went to the big sand box and Mom became ill in '03. We had prayed for a full recovery, but she missed Dad more than she wanted to be tied to the drudgery of daily living here.

We lost our baby. Wife called from dr office and said they could not find a heart beat. 0 -
Was listing to my scanner and they said they were opening a landing spot for the helo just up the road from me.
Naturally, I went to my neighbor's house and asked if she wanted to ride up there. So we took off for the two mile trip.
When we arrived, the helo was already there with the h'wy blocked off. I went to the care in front of me, I knew the driver, and asked what happened.
Kick in the teeth. He said his brother had just killed himself.
I knew his brother but not well but my neighbor's son and this guy were big buddies. Had even gone fishing together this week. She called him and gave him the bad news.
Now this guy was a resource engineer and has worked on some very big projects including the dam project in China. Should not have had money problems but don't know anything his home life, nor do I want to. just a very sad situation all around. Tom0 -
got home last night and one of the dogs played a little to rough with Taylors kittin and killed it
she just got it about one or two weeks ago
I told here we need to get one a little older that was not so trusting of the dogs [V][V]0 -
we have a ten year old German Shepard "Buddy "
he slipped a couple nights ago and his left rear leg just gave out
took him to the vet today , they did some ex-rays . showed what looks to be a huge mass ( tumor ) and arthritis has taken hold in his hips and spine the trip he had on the floor must have just enough to complete pinching the nerve to his leg so no signals are getting to his leg .
he is also missing a testicle ( we knew and was going to have it checked ) vet thinks it was taken over by a tumor pulled up inside and now possibly has cancer and also possible prostate cancer send off some samples ( 650.00 vet bill today )
we had already talked on the way up having Buddy put down was going to be almost a sure thing .
Vet gave him some pain pills and meds to reduce the inflammation , if the test come back as cancer and he has not recovered the use of his leg by Monday
we are going to have the vet come out and with heavy hearts have him put down '
he has been as good of a "buddy " as could be ask for
big old baby looked scary as all get out, but harmless
we got him as a pup from a couple who bought him then decided with in a few weeks they did not want a dog ..
we have been down this road many times during our marriage its never easy , going to be a lot of sad days ahead0 -
One of my kids friends she grew up with got in a fight and lost then went home anf told his mom and girlfiend that he was going to kill someone and then went in his room and shot himself in the temple with a 38 special. Now he is blind in both eyes. [:(] 0 -
I am writing this for Gunpaq.
Last Thursday night the Lord took Mrs. Gunpaq in a tragic auto accident. There was no suffering. She was 55 and leaves behind two daughters and four grandsons.
She had become an avid shooter and enjoyed reading the posts on GunBroker over the shoulder of Gunpaq. The day before the accident she and Gunpaq were out shooting the M1 Garand and their Rugers in the snow.
Your prayers would be welcomed for her family and Gunpaq during this difficult time.

I'm so sorry to here that. Maybe you have some dogs that can't be around cats. If so, the age won't matter and the incident will just happen again. I had a bird dog that for some reason hated cats. He killed every one he got to. We just didn't have cats during his life.
Explain to Taylor that it is just natures way, and tell her the dogs still love her, they just do what dogs do.

Danny the dogs have been around cats but the younger one is only a year old and still likes to play but never offerd to hurt the little kitten I think something spoked the kitten and it took off and the puppy thought it was a game and got him.(I did have a horse get out and that always sets the pup off maybe it spoked the cat)
we have two kittens but the other one is older and wont put up with her like the baby did.0 -

Its hard to keep a kitten and a dog....believe me, I'm going through that right now
My dog loves nothing more than chasing cats....I don't think she'd hurt one intentionally but she's so big she could do fatal damage to one just by "playing around"
Brady HAD to have a kitten, she didn't want an older cat....so I'm trying to figure out how to keep things peaceful.
I didn't like doing it, but my stratagy so far as revolved around pre-emptively yelling at the dog over the slightest thing. It helps that the kitten appears to be quite the little hard-ass
Its not fair to her, but so far I haven't had any trouble. I'll ease off as time goes on, but right now it seems to be the best solution.
Hope your daughter doesn't take things too hard...sometimes they blame themselves. Also....keep a eye on that dog. I know of a couple girls who have poisoned dogs that killed their cats.0 -

she was upset i told her we would get another one if she wanted
she wants to wait a week or two I am just glade it happen sooner then later as she would have been even more attached to it.0 -

I would have thought you would know better.
I advise against anymore "kittens", unless the dog is going to become an outside dog, until the cat is grown. When they are young, they don't have the mechanisms to protect themselves.[:(]
It is hard enough to get a small dog to get along with full grown cats,.........at least they have a chance though.

We found a four week kitten in the woods one day after our 17 year old cat passed away. We have another 12 year old cat, a four year old 102lb. retriever mix, and a 92lb. Doberman mix. We used to shut the kitten in the bathroom with food , water, and a litterbox during the day and in a large dog crate with food, water, and the litterbox in the bedroom at night until he got big enough to take care of himself. The Dobe mix could car less about the kitten. The retriever mix is always playing with him. He would have killed him when he was smaller but not on purpose. He is just too big and strong for a tiny kitten. You have to separate them when no one is around to watch them.

Instinct is a strong thing in dogs. Especially the terrier breeds when it comes to bite "bite and shake". Play is practice for life in the animal world, and for carnivorous predators, the ancestors of domesticated dogs, biting the head or the neck of small animals and shaking is impulsive and irrestible, not particularly something the dog plans or thinks about.
Younger dogs are more prone to do this, but of course and old dog with a habitual history of killing rats or rabbits or the same sized animals with his masters approval cannot be expected to resist the impulse.
I had a little red wirey haired terrier that weighed 14 lbs catch and kill a huge grainery rat in a matter of seconds. One of my nephews was lifting up an aluminum 8" irrigation pipe and Sally the terrier heard the scratching of it's claws as it slid dkown the pipe. She leapt from the seat of the pickup and intercepted the rat before he got three feet from the end of the pipe. She grabbed him by the back of the neck and shook him once and threw him on the ground. We were astonished. The rat never moved after hitting the ground, he was dead as a doornail. Instantaneous. That's a good thing to have around a country or suburban place.
Forget about kitties, get her her own puppie. Half of the people you know are going to be allergic to cats, anyway. IMO.

tough lesson to learn about life at early age...if you live somewhere taylor can get out & about a puppy/young dog might turn into a real companion that would share adventures 0 -

Marc sadie is not that big of a dog and she is a outside dog but the cats go out also

I am going to get her another kitten from the same batch that came from it was the smallist of them but they were being raised outside with 3 heelers that would kill them if they got to them so i fig. they would be fine with my two.
I am going to wait till they get a little bigger before I get the next one and then it will stay inside till it get older.
Taylor agrees with my line of thinking on this I just hope it works I hate seeing somethings life end so soon.

Same thing could happen with a very young puppy, but small kittens are very fragile, and don't have the speed, nor the slash the nose with the claws response yet.
I would just hate to see the same thing happen again, by getting her another, and the conditions that caused the first accident are still the same.
It's your home, and daughter though, and your decision to make.
If it was me, and she is set on a cat,.......I would get her one that is a bit further down the road to fullsize.

When I was younger we had Great Danes. We have also had several cats....they lived out in the barn with the horses. One day I looked out to see Rommel throwing something up in the air. He was having the very best time with whatever it was.....then I saw the legs of the kitten as it spun in the air. I ran out there, but it was too late. Rommel didn't know he had done anything bad at all. He was just playing. I am sorry to hear your little girl's kitten is gone. 0
