Grandparents...gone nuts...BMW Z3 2.5 convertable!
Lets just say I am light headed and a bit naucious. I have been trying to get an idea of what I MIGHT get for the oldest child of mine when the time comes. My parents have decided that a "fun" thing for her to have would be the bright YELLOW sportscar that has been my mother's "second" car for the past year. This is a 5 speed....itty bitty....death trap.
Bright YELLOW, convertable, 5 speed, two seater, BMW Z3 2.5 liter (whatever THAT means...never got the whole liter thing down.)
I am just sick thinking about this. Looking at her sitting in it makes my tummy swim. She is a long way off from being out on the road....but WOW is this SO not anything I had in mind!!!!

She has been driving around the local streets for quite a while now...in my car. I figure all the practice I can get is a good thing so we have had her driving for a long time now (with US in the car.) She has gotten to go a mile down the road to go to a friend's house by herself.
I have to admit I had some pretty nice cars growing up (thanks to my parents) but I did not expect them to do this.0 -

I really don't know WHAT I think quite yet. I am playing it by ear right now. Her father thinks it is a BAD idea and I am just about on the edge of being sick even thinking about it.
She is so excited....I would be as low as they get if we don't let her get it...but its just not what I am ready for. If I let her have it later...maybe....but by then I will not be any LESS worried about her being out in something like that.
I have given her ALL KINDS of speaches already and she isn't even driving yet. NOBODY else can drive it....at all! If anyone even says they see you out horsing around its gone. Bad grades like you got this past year...it will be taken away. No palying with the radio, cell phone, anything at all while driving. We don't even plan on her driving at all for over 6 months and I'm petrified.0 -

and think of it this way, with a hot car of her own she won't make like other girls her age and chase after spoiled boys with cool cars [;)]
EDIT: checked carpoint: 170 horses for a 3000lb car doesn't sound like she'd get into too much trouble0 -

I don't see what all the excitement is about ... its a car!
Its small enough she can't have her whole group of friends riding around with her ... cool enough that she'll be drawn in with other friends with cool cars.
Just maybe showing her the finer things in life will give her a peek of the life she could have ... if she gets good grades she's more likely to get a good job.

Kids should not have expensive cars. Kids should have cars that they have saved money for and purchased.
When a kid is given an expensive car, what on earth does he or she look forward to? A more expensive car?
When a kid is given an expensive car, how well do you think he or she will care for it? Look at people who live in Section 8 housing -- they almost always live in ratholes. Why? Because they didn't pay for it.
It doesn't matter if the kid has good grades or bad grades. This is one of those lessons of life that a kid should have to go through:
1. A car is an adult responsibility. It is not a toy.
2. If you want a car, you need to act like a responsible adult.
3. If you want a car, you save up the money for one just like an adult.
4. If you want a car, you will make sure that it (and you) are insured. By the way, adults pay for their own insurance. Do you know how much it costs for a teenager on an insurance policy?
5. Gas is $3.00 per gallon right now. Guess what? Adults figure out how to afford the gas and afford everything else, too.
When I was 16, my father could very easily have purchased any car I wanted. Instead, he made me do research on the best used cars, he made me save up for a car, and he made me pay for the gas and any associated costs for that car.
While I was really pi$$ed at 16 because all my friends were driving BMWs, Mercedes, etc. and I was stuck driving a 13-year old American car (which, incidentally, I wish I still owned today), I learned some incredibly valuable life lessons, and I think it was the right way to introduce kids to being responsible vehicle owners.0 -

You'd be real suprised. My Miata pushed 180 and was 22-2400lbs, it was a screamer.
My 1992 Mazda Protege was not that powerful a vehicle, but weighed close to nothing. With a manual transmission, you could have that car literally flying over the road.
And, my 1986 VW Golf would easily do 120+ (that's where the speedo maxxed out). Did it all the time while I was driving around the country at 19.0 -

Rumor has it Locustfork...[8][8] I remember paying high insurance when young.. Wow.. speeding tickets... Now with 2 Corvettes it runs $612 Yr.for both of them.. Getting old does have an advantage.0 -

I agree with the whole.....its a good way to learn the value of a dollar thing...but I turned out fine and had some pretty kick but cars that I didn't earn when I was younger. I didn't really buy my own car until I was married and had kids. I was able to....but my parents just always gave me nice cars. Its not something that spoils you completely to have someone give you things. Being given a nice car isn't like a nail in a coffin. The thing with this car is the SAFETY issues I can't get past.
And the boys.....
Oh, are we gonna have problems with them!!! She is 5'10" tall....blonde and looks like a super model (with bad posture.) I have had nightmares about boys for about two years now.0 -

Personally I think the people that are saying no ... are just jealous.
I drove a 8 year old piece of crap car, I scrimped and saved for when I was a kid in high school ... didn't teach me anything except I wanted a nice car.
When I turned 18 and got my first sports car, an MG B, I went to nicer places, dressed nicer and associated with a better crowd/class of people ... the old friends that were holding me down/back just kind of melted away over time ... this was new to me and I liked it.
The car elevated my status to a place where I wanted to be ... and allowed me to see future possibilities. Believe it or not, perceptions are cast based on what you drive and it is a reflection of you, just like where you live ... it doesn't matter if "you" don't care what other people think; people still form their opinions and they can have a drastic effect on your life.

Not a good choice for first car,we have one in the family, I drive it from time to time.193 HP in a 2998 lb car is a handfull, quick handling little fun car,but for seasoned adult driver. This is not a toy ,although it will shut down at 125 mph, 0-60 os about 6 seconds, not a pocket rocket, but still pretty wild to drive. 0 -
I really expected this thread to be about crazy grandparents buying the convertible for themselves when they should be driving a Crown Vic.
A friend of ours has a sixteen year old daughter. They agreed to pay 50% of the cost of a car. They found a low mileage Sunbird convertible in Wisconsin at a reasonable price.
That girl has torn it up in the last 9 months AND NONE OF IT WAS HER FAULT[;)]. This girl is responsible. She is just a bad driver at 17. Ice, curbs, ditches... The car was in perfect condition. Now there is cracked, broken, and scratched plastic all over.

Ha. Jealousy has nothing to do with it. If I wanted one, I'd buy one. Actually I test drove one a couple years ago. Almost bought it, bought the Miata instead.
I'm sticking to practical for now.
