This Baby is Yellow!
On Sunday I went to the birthday party of my girlfriend's grandson, he is four years old.
The little granddaughter was at the party. She is 8 months old. I noticed that the baby's ears and face had a faint yellow hue. I told my girlfriend that the baby's face was yellow. She became very concerned. The baby's father heard what I had said, he seemed unconcerned.
I told them, as Paramedics we were taught that yellow skin can be caused by hepatitis and by liver failure, this baby needs to see a doctor.
We went over and told the baby's mother the same thing. She conceded that there was a faint yellow color, but she, too did not seem too concerned. She said they had a regular doctor's appt. in a week, and the doctor would check it out.
On the way home from the party, I told my girlfriend one other thing I recalled from being a Paramedic so long ago. If a person eats a lot of carrots their skin can turn yellow.
The next day my girlfriend called her daughter to get the update. Her daughter told her that they were actually quite concerned about their yellow baby. They rushed home from the party and cranked up the Google.
They found that, first, the baby's eyes were white, not yellow, which indicated it probably was not liver problems. Then, they read that a faint yellow hue to the skin can be caused by eating lots of carrots and sweet potatoes.
About two weeks ago, the baby started going nuts over a certain baby food which is strained sweet potatoes and carrots. The mother had given the baby this food every day for the past two weeks. Case closed.

When I brought this problem up to the mother, there were about six women sitting at that table, two grandmothers, friends of the mother etc.[The party time coincided with the Bears game, funny, I was the only guy at the party].
So when I said the baby looked a little dark, and yellow, all the women started making excuses. They were saying, "Well she always had darker skin than anyone else in the family. There is nothing wrong with the child. She probably just spilled some baby food on her face." etc etc.
I thought to myself, "If this is the normal color of this baby, better check and see if the milkman is a Chinaman."0 -

Damned good reason for me never to eat strained carrots...[;)]

Beta-carotenemia is a rather common but benign condition.
Its a condition where the skin takes a yellowish hue, and is caused from ingesting large amounts of foods containing beta-carotenes (carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and yams).
Unlike the jaundice caused by liver failure, in beta-carotenemia the palms and sclerae does not turn yellow.0 -
Seing your kids all of the time makes it hard to notice things like that. Its a good thing you are on your toes and have enough concern for others to point out things like that. Good catch....they should still go get checked just to be certain. 0 -
I better cut back on sweet taters. I'm the tallest in the pics

Happened to our little girl too. When you are starting a baby on "real" foods, all the orange/yellow veggies are first, and thats the only "real" food they get for a few weeks..... On our daughter tho her nose looked like an ooompalooompa's (from the old 60s WW movie, not the new one) 0 -

Eat carrots, best way to get a tan without exposure to UV.[^] 0 -
No bull. This HAPPENED to me. I ate too many yellow vegies - carrots, squash, etc. Yep..turned yellow. Put me in the hospital for a week. 4th or 5th day, doc notices that one nurse wrote in my chart how much I liked vegetables....it donned on him then.
In a three week time period, when I was 4 or 5...I went to the emergency room three times.
#1 - burned arm/wrist from hot coffee.
#2 - stitches in my forehead - terrible trike wreck, I went over the handle bars.
#3 - took most of my mom's birth control medicine at once.0 -
sounds like the kind of thing to bring up in private[:0] 0 -
