9mm or .40 Caliber Browning Hi-Power??

Planning on getting one of the two. Will be used for home defense and mainly for target shooting and plinking around. Any advice or tips on which to get. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    If you're going to do more plinking than self-defense (a likely scenario), I'd go with the 9mm. The ammo is far less costly. And with the right load, the 9mm is still plenty deadly for self-defense.

    I have the Browning in 9mm. It is far and away more accurate than I am. It is the most accurate centerfire pistol that I own and its not even set up for target shooting. I have had it for about 10 years now and it has never ever jammed and is as smooth as glass. I have no experience with the .40cal but if its as good as my 9mm you have a delightful dilemma on your hands.

    Like stated above, if your doing mostly target work you should go with the 9mm, if it is mostly a defensive weapon then go with the 40, or the best way to do it is to buy one of each[;)]

    I agree with the 9. The 9 is plenty of powerful enough for defense. It is also cheaper and more pleasant to shoot.

    I love high powers... I have two, one older Browning and a newer one marked FN. I actually shoot better with a 1911 or a revolver (Don't know if its me or the gun... I think its the smaller frame/lighter weight) but the hp feels so much better in my hand. I've never had a jam or malfunction with either one.

    A T Series 9mm Browning Hi-Power is what I have for a home defense weapon and it is also the weapon I used to qualify for my Carry Conceal license. I've never fired a .40 Caliber, so I can't make a comparison, but I sure like my 9mm!

    I have shot both and several 9mm's and I would go with the classic Hi Power caliber of 9mm. It is one of the guns on my list to buy at some point.

    I have had both, and the .40 is heavier and feels clunky, compared to the 9. Got rid of the .40 for another 9.

    I am a fan of the .40 S&W cartridge.

    I appreciate everyones input. It had been recommended to me by several people in the military to go with the .40 . so I was somewhat convinced - but now I'm having second thoughts and leaning in the other direction. I think that there is much complaining about the caliber of the weapons in the military and everyone wants more stopping power.

    Don't forget, civilians can use hollow points and frangible ammo.

    I ONLY like the 9MM in the Taurus 92 and the High Power.

    IIRC didn't the Hi-Power have probs handleing the .40 S&W? or did Brownimg beef them up??

    9mm hi power is a no-loose situation. You will never be "out gunned" with a hi power in 9mm.

    I feel the 9MM is more than enough for defense and its alot cheaper to shoot. I like their new Pro 9 Series pistol, may be worth a look. Good Luck!

    I had no problems with the .40 - the slide was heavy and the balance was off, so it just felt wrong to me.

    Over the years I would say I have sold 10 Browning Hi Power 9mm for ONE 40 cal in the same model. The 9mm is the "original" and the rounds are a LOT cheaper....the 9mm is also a WAY better target round for shooting. Kind of like standing next to a short person to feel taller...shoot a 9mm and you'll be a better shooter.

    Myself, I have the 40cal....but its because it had the dad-burn prettiest grips I have ever seen on one of these.

    I just LOVE the sound of a Hi Power...nothing else makes that sound when you pull the slide back.
