oil = danger rant pics added
lots of people have asked me "can i put too much oil on my gun?"
YES!!!
good example on my bench right now. dont think it was done by the current owner as they are "gun people" and when they got it they want it re-done a.s.a.p.
winchester gallery gun...when i parted the reciever oil RAN out of it! and not just oil...moisture had mixed with it and made a rusty sludge inside.
just about all screws were siezed fast, pitting evrywhere.
the gunk had trapped nearly a tea-spoon full of grit and metal particles between the extracter and reciever.
someone had done a poor blueing job, not polished, just sanded with maybe 320 grit and all the sand marks left in.
sanded nearly through the winchester logo on the tang, i hope to save what is left if possible when i polish.
and the lower tang has CRATERS of rust pitting that it doesnt even look like they TRIED to polish out.
so in a few weeks or so look forward to a "really big job" post when i have before and after pics...right now i obviously have a lot of work to do.
if you look, you can see "rough" area in reciever groove and on extracter...

because al this crud was between the two!

what passed for "polishing" dureing the last blue job[:(]

almost through the logo on the top tang...hope i can save what is left

doesnt look like they did ANYTHING on the sight, may make less work not haveing to fix a f.u.

and here is where the oil/water sludge lay in bottom of reciever

I've had so much gun oil in my semis that when I shoot the first round oil gets in my eyes...oh yeah, use some WD-40[:0] to do a pre-clean on it and to free the screws etc... 0 -
geez! how about installing a dipstick on the receiver 0 -
And on a gun that is easily taken down for a complete cleaning....pretty sad!!! 0 -

I though oil prevented rust, and [not all] repel water?
Actually the poster is correct Oil can and does isolate water into beads or little puddle and they can be trapped in the nooks and crannies...
In fact I see this as an important topic that any gun owner should investigate into much deeper ===proper cleaning...0 -
Can't wait to see the end results of the project. 0 -

I would only hope that when I'm 100 years old somebody will restore me to near original.[:D]0 -
When I'm 100 yrs old...I want someone to come along and make me BETTER than original.....they'll have to dig me up to do it though (I'm falling apart already at 39.)
I know from what I have seen you do you are going to do great things with this one....like all of the others you get your hands on.[;)]0
